Progress still S   L   O    W :banghead:  The previous owner has made such a mess of the over-sill it's a real pain to get both off. However, got most of the flanges clean, after another 4 hours still got the rear part of the lower flange to clean off but nearly there!

(The brown around the slots in inner wing is rust primer, not rust!)

I've cut off some rear wing and rear corner too…

Fortunately there was plenty off waxoyl in here so not too much to worry about on inner arch.
One day I WILL start welding! :lol:

Looks like some clean cutting there mate  :y:

just make sure (you probably already know but no harm in mentioning) when you start welding, weld small bit's at a time or you'll get the crisp packet effect like mine  :D

Thanks for the comment, it's not too bad for free hand! Will tidy up before welding on new. Those extra thin cutting discs are excellent for cutting, just don't last very long!

takes me back seeing your pic's rich. i found hadrian do have offside inner arches its usually the numpties in the shop who cant find them in the catalogue.



when it looks like this the hard work is done and the skin on your hands stops falling appart!!


good luck with welding and take your time i.e.- one set of tack/spot welds to every cup of tea whilst the panel cools down. be careful when grinding back the welds as this can destort the panel worse than the welding if it becomes too hot!

Just so you know I can supply all those hadrian panels - check out http://www.golfmk1.co.uk/PatternPanels.htm

I can do most other panels too.

I'd suggest not going too mad cutting stuff off - do one panel at a time so you keep all your alingments and refernces.  Even a rust bit can help align parts properly.

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D

One of these days I may actually get to sticking some new metal to my MK1 :banghead:  :lol:  Progress has been slow getting the TWO outer sills off of the off-side. Had another hour or so on it today.

Cut some of the lower b-post off too in readiness for a repair section I have. Then a bit of cleaning up and can get on with putting more panels on!

Need a bit of help though. See the section in the red circle,

…and the close up here;

…anyone know what this should look like when not rotten? - or better still have pics! Just curious as to how much of a repair I need to do here?

Also, the small lip at the bottom outer edge of the inner sill, how critical is it that this remains intact?

Any help appreciated

NEW SILL ON


Trial fit the outer sill and you will see where you need to be chopping and welding in new metal to meet it . It not crucial that the repair in the inner sill looks the same as the factory product . Just that its rust free , stronger  and when the outer sill is fitted it 'looks factory' . When i did the car in the pictures i cut out all the old jacking support in the sill [it was rotten] and just plated it . You can't tell and no one jacks there Mk1 up by the sill anyway    8O

Nice one, cheers chudd. Helps a lot. I was worried how much of this part of inner still should retain its original shape!

Do I take it from the pics you put a repair section at bottom of b-post? I have to do this to. Was it easy enough to maintain the original shape of the door shut?

PS: Just noticed on the pic of the front of the sill, something (a nail?) hanging down inside?

I had a load of nails punched through in the same place. Are these from the factory or did both our cars have the same previous owner?!

Those nails , i think were factory carpet grippers  8O

B post , i was lucky in that my sill met the old part of the post . But it would be quite easy once sill is fitted to put a small fillet of metal in and before painting tidy it up with a thin skim of filler .

Best I put the nails back in then!

Well I promised myself I wouldn't post on here again until I actually got some new metal stuck on but couldn't resist! :oops:

Had Sunday for a few hours on the car - thought this time I really would get welding but as always things took longer than planned :banghead:

About ready to start on putting metal back in to off side beam mounting area but so much seam sealer to get off, it took ages. Anyway, this is how it looks with section already cut out;

I've made up some repair patches for the inner sill too.

Popped up to see Chudd on Saturday. Going for a spin in his Mars Red MK1 really made me grin like a Cheshire cat and has given me a bit of a rocket up my backside to get cracking on this and get driving my MK1 again. I've now got Saturday free so will be burried under it! :cheer:

Hopefully I'll be posting pics of new metal on Saturday at long last!
