Metalwork is all looking solid, every rubber grommet, plug, boot, pipe etc will have to be replaced, ended up taking out ALL wiring, might as well start fresh, half of it is nakkered anyway,
now that nearly all the car is stripped can anyone reccomend anything to get rid of the burnt plastic smell, bicarb of soda i put down in there worked well in that the bicarb powder itself stinks so it must be absorbing it well, apparently cut lemons/onions in the car will help diffuse the smell….and obviously some fresh air.
here is some pics of the progress, this is very much the easiest part, didnt take long as i didnt have to worry about breaking anything when taking it apart as it was all shot already.
only exhaust to cut off, driveshafts off and then engine mounts, and ittl be whipped out.
now that its all out, ittl give me the oppurtunity to repaint all the inside etc, get it looking completely spot on.

barren

leftover mess from engine/dash

slightly more bare

new a few weeks ago…

melted plastic everywhere…

the inferno epicentre.
there u go, not really pics to enjoy but there for the record nonetheless, all progress in some form i spose…. hopefully ill have the engine out by the wknd, start cleaning it back to bare metal and zinc primering it, ready to be sorted out, also gna be stripping a 1.1 for various parts mid week
anyone know if u cud replace top mounts without undoing the strut from the hub assembly, as i had camber just adjsuted and would like to leave it alone if possible.
thanks again.

I take it sandblasting is your next step?
Good luck with it and hopefully it won't be too long before there's a bit of life in the little car again.

Wish there was more I could say to make it all better!
Current MK1 rebuild elapsed time - 15 years and counting…
Is it normal to clean and paint bits of your car that will never be seen?
Not-so-new addition - 1996 MK1 Citi Golf (off the road for 4 years… and counting)

basically had the horrible job of removing all the tar matting on the floor, a blowtorch and a scraper is without doubt the easiest way to do it, the longer u do it for the floorpan gets hotter and slides off. note: the fuel lines do get very hot, so be very careful when doing the drivers side….
gna try chipping away and getting them all back to bare metal by the end of the week, to por-15 then zinc primer it.
ive removed it all fromt the rain tray back to bare metal now, hope to get the engine lifted out next weekend, ive got a 1.8gti (k jet) engine out of a low mileage mk2 to put in now! gotta get a loom, dash and some other bits to get a whole car again.
heres the pics:
coming off nicely:

mess:

more mess:

found a bit of rust, sort of knew it was here, hadnt got round to investigating it, where some idiot jacked the car up on the floor pan, needs a bit of inner sill work and edge of floorpan, shouldnt be too bad to weld.

and finally a lovely shiny floorpan!!! looks awesome, only another 3 to go now… did find some pitting in the grooves, and water was sitting under the matting, so im glad i caught it now.

updates soon

What an absolute nightmare. Feel for you mate. Good to see you getting back in about it again. You seemed to be so enjoying the car to, before the incident.
All the best with the car.
First Golf, lots of work. I've started so I'll finish!
