Should have said… I can get an ABT code engine easily locally , is that like anewer "3A"? and will it go in , preferably with my K-jet head?
Or…………….are there any 8v crossflow lumps that are a good swap?

don't use an abt its low comprestion only 90 bhp msot 2.0l 8v from all vw audi's will go in some may need a changed sump and oil pump, most comon and straight forward are the 2e or agg tall block in golf/vento/passat mk3, seat ibiza cordoba and taledo. but some say the exhaust knocks and they need a ring for the dizzy hole to fit an older dizzy, all avaliable and easy to sort out. a nice pack c or above head and cam, and she'll fly!
merry xmas.

Would my pistons and head go into the abt , and raise the compression?

if you are running a 1.8 your pistons won't fit the abt engine.

What do you consider "too much grief"? What kinds of tasks do you consider beyond you? For example, sussing out wiring, fabricating custom parts, welding, etc?

I've just got an ABK block for mine. I'm hoping it'll do the job as I payed ?150 for it. Haven't done any homework on it but it looks not too different.

Well….my MK1 was a 1.1 , with bullet fuses , and I converted it to later fusebox , and 1.8 GTi running gear . And I've had a hand in building rally cars here in the garage……….plus I'm a stubborn git!

In that case, I'd thoroughly recommend the 16V route. It logically, breathes so much better than the 8V that if you're swapping a motor, may as well do this. The only real complications revolve around getting the dizzy cap to fit, and rerouting the fuel lines to the other side of the engine bay. Oh, and the exhaust manifold will need swapping too. But then, if you're after more power, you'd be looking at a big bore exhaust anyway?

Will going to 2l 8v or 16v from 1.8l 8v require welding?
Would like to go down one of these routes at some point in the future.

No, it doesn't need welding. I am doing the 16V conversion and its airbox sits on the other side of the engine bay. I was thinking of making a decent job of it and welding in brackets for the airbox and washer bottle, which are the 2 things you need to swap around. But you could just self-tap (or bolt?) brackets into the inner wing/strut with no real issues.

Thank you, my question was more aimed at engine mounts or chassis strengthening as I don't think my welding is up to that level just yet.

You're fine, because pretty much all the 4 cylinder VW engines (big blocks) have bolt holes in the right places to bolt on the existing engine mounts, therefore fit nicely. The welding starts with 02A transmissions - unless you purchase expensive "adapter" gearbox mounts to get it into your Mk1. Then it gets significant with engines like VR6, where you need to possibly fabricate your own engine mounts, and attachment points onto the body. Also, you may need to fabricate/adapt the exhaust manifold or system.

Ahhhh…but logic never stopped me before! lol Tbh I like the "feel" of a good 8v , and It seems more appropriate to me in a ropy looking Mk1 , as mine is.
Plus it would really p1ss off the Jap hatch boys being left for dust by old skool engineering. Finally , I reckon 8v Golfs can handle a mite better than 16v's , lower weight in the engine bay , and less up high . Because I plan taking in a fair few trackdays in '07…

16V is so much more logical a route, given that it breathes better. I'd thoroughly recommend reading a lot of stuff (forum posts on CGTI Engine section, for example) where people have spent thousands building a 'super' 8V then having it rolling road tested, only to see a very mild gain.
It happens with 16Vs too, I read this 33 page thread where a guy built a 16V motor bottom end with loads of stuff shipped from USA, costs thousands, only to achieve 185bhp. Then after around 1000 miles, a main bearing broke up and the engine block and all the internals was eventually scrapped.
Here's the thread:

Well thanks for that good advice Paul…. but how the heck do you so much about Mk1's? I wish I knew all the useful tips you did..I'd save a helluva lot of time and money!
TBH , the ropey Mk1 will prob just get a Newman cam so , mebbe some diy porting and polishing then.
The master plan was always to 16v or 20v the other (green Campaign) that I'm slowly trying to build to showcar standard , using the ropey black one as a test bed , and to keep me interested in 'Dubbing.

Oh the green one is well dodgy , up on a spit at de mo , for welding . Family (busy!) business here , so fee time is tight for working on it … but gave the g/f her P45 , so that'll free up some time in the shed! lol
