Bren - oops dunno where I got bren from author maybe???

I am the owner of HNV 849T. reconditioned it myself (inside out inc engine refurb - many friends and family in the car business!) so mint condition, original dash, seats, 4 speed gbox, etc… I've got a few things left to do on it… put on the chin spoiler, spray up the steel wheels and a couple more things. BUT currently a non starter due to an electrical problem (no spark from the coil), apart from that, was running and driving few years ago.

I see there's other 1979 GTI's around, but I dont think that there any like 'T' (my cars name) i.e. some pre-production models (well i think it is anyway…)

Let me know if you know anymore info on it.

oh, there was a pic of it some years in vwaudi magazine, some guy had it on three wheels taking it around prescott hill climb when it first came here to the UK….

anyway, be good if you/anyone knows anymore on 'T'.

Its not been replied to because its pretty much been answered already (back in 2006):

The first RHD GTis (in the UK) would have been taken by VW UK themselves. The registrations of two of them were GVV 250T and HNV 850T. Both were still '79 Model Year with plastic bumpers. Ultimately it is the chassis number that counts, not registration letter.

Since GVV250T has been scrapped, HNV850T is 99.9% sure to be the first RHD Mk1 GTI in the UK.

Is the car green? Do you know the original colour (eg under carpets, or other hidden area of bodywork)?

AAAh right, didn't notice I was 1 digit out. Do you want yours to be the first RHD, or the earliest RHD still on the road? For it to claim to be the first would need the chassis numbers of it and the other 2 comparing, and I don't think there's any way of getting the chassis number from a reg number of a scrapped car, unless you have a legitimate interest (ie own it, police, DVLA, etc) in the car. I don't think VW kept records back in them day and preserved them.

earlier in this thread mk1turbo claimed 'I know someone with a silver gti registered on the first day they were made available in the uk, with 1 owner from new and full service history. I will not disclose his name though as he is quite private about it. Quite a find though.' , so I guess this is the ultimate 1979 T Reg MK1 GTI, however, as secret as its been kept, mine probably is the only one/first one which is still around and known about, well becoming to be known about…

Well, its really good that you have a very early one and are keeping it original and cherishing it. I had a 1981 (series 2) but it got modified subtly, it was still nice to have it more/less original though. I did also look at a series 1 (slightly newer, with 5 speed) and it was a nice car, bit tatty, but at the end of the day a late series 1 and an early series 2 aren't that much different, so no real justification to get one for me.

I guess there's a little nostalgia associated with being the first of something, but remember its not the first mk1 GTI, or the first GTI in the UK, since these would have occurred probably in Germany, and with a UK LHD car.
