Just picturing DjEv in an Allegro………..  he, he !!!

All mine have been OK.  G40 Polo prob the worst due to brakes and suspension being nowhere near good enough for the performance of the engine. Would have been fun with uprated shocks / brakes though. Fondest memories is of my '86 Astra SRi. Great car that one. Got sick of welding it up for every MOT though…………

Mine has to be a poo brown MK3 Escort 1.1 8O
It leaked like a seive, then the head gasket went, then the clutch started slipping. And that was in the first couple of weeks of having it.
In the end I noticed some ripply looking paintwork and started digging at it (as you do) and the whole car was full of filler. Too rotten to even think about going for MOT! What a lemon.

MK1 GTI Campaign
MK2 GTI 8v
Imitation Magic Tree - 'Black Ice' smell
Plenty of rust
Embarrasing fuel problem
Porous cooling system!

Does this mean we can blame the decline of the British car industry on you????

Go on then. Amuse us with your work at the now-defunct Austin Rover. Did you install the square steering wheels into the Allegros, and each time you picked one up and screwed one in, p*** yourself laughing and say to yourself "we're doomed! we're doomed!" What were the breaks like?

Hi,
Dano signing in and STILL keeping it on the BROWN subject…….

My worst car was my first car ?780 bought me an 'S' redg Mk2 Brown Escort Popular in 1984. I wasn't aware of the different spec levels when I was 18 and quickly learnt about them!

I showed my mate the car, who wasnt with me when I bought it and he kindly pointed out that it had been shunted up the rear at some point and repaired… poorly. I hadnt noticed the wavy door and rear panels!!

3 weeks after I bought it I was going out one sunny Sunday evening and saw a lad who I knew. His bike chain had come off. I was momentarily distraced by this and when I looked back to the road in front a car had decided to turn right in front of me. The problem was there was a car behind him… needless to say I didnt have enough stopping distance even at 30mph (ish). CRASH!!! Into 1 and then the other. 3 car pile up in a 1 -road village, on a busy Sunday evening, loadsarubberneckers!! I couldnt even get out of the car as the doors were jammed shut!!

Anyway back to the car……….. front end totalled, written off, new panels needed to make good. I should have left it there. I hadn't even paid my first insurance installment!! The car was fixed, more wavy lines in the panels. But at least it ran well.

All winter I had cold air blowing through the car and only in May '85 did i realise that there was an air lock in the radiator.

From there on I have had a love affair with 'BROWN' cars.

I hate to say it but the worst car I ever owned was a Mk1 Golf C, my second car. Didn't know much about them at the time unfortunately (I was only 19).

It suffered from:

A Rusted fuel tank
A Rust problem in general
Spinning off the road occasionally for no apparent reason (probably a dodgy new shock in hindsight)

Had a

Voracitious appetite for 'points' and 'plugs'
Needed retuning every three months

Also the

Dashboard caught fire
Rear wiper seized up twice
Sunroof jammed half closed
Never passed an MOT first time in all the time I had it

Amazing I ended up with a Mk1 GTI afterwards really!

Any one else ?

My first car was a bright yellow Datsun Stanza, with rust appearing on most panels within six months and a blocked radiator which my boyfriend at the time didn't know about and drove until it made a funny horn-like noise (pressure??) then lost power and wouldn't go anymore. He cooked the engine. After getting the head replaced (cheaper than buying a new car - I was a poor student), the rings showed signs of going, the timing chain hit the rocker cover, and something started making a tinging noise (apart from the timing chain).

Then a truck drove into the side (I knocked that back into shape with a rubber mallet and kept the insurance money for a future car), and someone decided to key every panel at the local train station one day (could they have picked a crapper car? I wasn't at all bothered). It also smelt like damp dog hair, which I finally tracked down to a leak in the back windscreen which rotted the carpets in the back passenger footwells.

I somehow managed to get a grand (in Aus) for it when I traded it in by saying that my brother's mechanic mate was happy to use it as a runaround and work on the motor in his spare time for a grand, so they'd have to match it. So, they doubled their offer to match and I got rid of the bucket of rust for once and for all! It was a very happy day.

The question here is how do you rate the worst car you have ever owned?
Is this decision based on how many times something has gone wrong?
is it based on how much you have spent on repairs?
is it rated on how much you have spent on it since you have owned it to improve upgrade and modify?
if it is based on the above then it would have to be without a shadow of a doubt my current Mk1 Golf Gti cabby but the thing is its probably the best car i have ever owner because like a child i am willing to forgive and forget the problems and expense it has cost me over the passed 2 yrs,,
i know if all the hard earned cash i have ploughed in to this car over the time i have owned it i could have gone on holiday round the world, fed a family in Africa for 10yrs, bought a brand new Citroen C1 I'm not joking either.
so the Answer is the worst car is also the best, what else can i drive that makes me feel like i don't care about my carbon footprint makes people smile yes even ford drivers try not to grin but cant help themselves admiring the little car with such deep sense of motoring history Jeramy Clarkson was right this is the car of the last century..

Dont ask what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club?

I hope the interior was brown too, to disguise the sk*d marks!   Bad luck.

P.S - I'd love a brown Mk1  :y:

I once bought an allegro for 50 quid and the bodywork looked mint but one day I was leaving collage with a few mates, I braked at a junction and the front wheels tucked under the car cos the chassis was completely rotten, but my worst car was a few years ago when I bought a nearly new mg zr160 (the rover 25 shape one), I think I had a moment of madness and I spent the next 2 years regretting every minute of it
