Warm up fuel pressure reg dismantling

Chris - did you ever get a pressure gauge?  Seen this on the interweb this morning. Looks good and cheap $89 = ?47. Might get one myself in the near future, would very useful for diagnostics.

Hi Mark,

Yes I ended up getting one from JCWhitney in the states. Not had a chance to use it yet as I used one I borrowed from Wellsy, but the quality looks OK.

With import duty, VAT and delivery it came to about 60 quid. Crazyquiff also ordered one and I believe he has actually used his. It came with connectors for lots of different K-Jet systems.

Cheers,

Chris

re:

"My current diagnosis is that the warm up reg is faulty and is not reducing the fuel flow once the engine has warmed up. This leads to the mixture being too rich and the engine just dies and won't restart. This would also explain why the engine seems to start fine once truly cold again as the richer mixture would not be a problem then"

If you run round t'front when it dies and whip out a spark plug, wouldn't it be either wet with petrol or all sooted up if were to be getting too rich a mixture??

Methinks I've alread spake that the Carbon Deposit remover gell or whatever (Chip pan cleaner) from your local Betterwear or Kleeneze brush co man will get yer ally bits nice and clean.

Remember also that WD40 is not a penetrating oil … you need something like "Plus Gas" or "3-in-1 penetrant spray", etc. to be really effective.

Hi superworm.

That diagnosis was a while back   , and I think I misunderstood the way the warm up reg actually worked at the time. The warm up reg (and the secondhand replacement I tried) were both duffers, but I only found that out for sure when I actually did the pressure tests.

I then got a loan of a known good reg from Rich (crazyquiff), which will be replaced with a GSF "new" one very shortly. The pressure tests on Rich's reg confirmed it was in spec, and sure enough the car now works.

I also had a supplementary issue with a slightly defective coil as well which I think was complicating the issue. To be on the safe side I replaced the coil, the HT leads, the plugs, the dizzy rotor and cap too.

Pressure tests are the only reliable way to find out whats going on with fuel issues imho - any other approach is going to be more luck than judgement and could lead to unnecessary replacement of parts.

I have certainly learnt the hard way, and suspect the pressure gauge will certainly be one of the first ports of call for future issues of this nature.

I take it that we are happy with the GSF warm up reg then?  :D

I have accepted that the Visa bill is going to be a large one and booked into the local specialist to get the running sorted, fit a new accelerator cable and a f/n/s oil leak stopped. While in I asked them to look at the steering rack to see if it can be adjusted. Then I hope it will run a lot better through the summer.

Actually, I'm still on Rich's loan reg at the mo   . The VISA card is in training for the trip to GSF as I need to sort the exhaust and inlet manifold gaskets and studs / nuts too   . Just realised my MOT is coming up in a month and I think the emissions will be a bit out as it is at the mo.

Once I get the standard cam and the exhaust blow sorted I might think about investing in one of the 100 quid gunson pro gas analysers - the colortune is OK for getting the mixture roughly right, but I need to check the MX-5 emissions too as its due for an MOT late summer.

Might as well spend the money a garage would use to get myself the equipment and get it in the ballpark myself.

"Might as well spend the money a garage would use to get myself the equipment and get it in the ballpark myself."

Spoken like a true gentleman……I started life with a busted Riley Elf Gearbox back in '63 …dealer replaced it with a "gold-Seal" box which was 5 times as bad as the one they took out (it only needed the final drive nut tightening/locking) so other than warranty period servicing, no car of mine has ever been back to a dealer.  I now have enough tackle to  do ANY job on a mini and 99% of those on my Golf (no…make that 100%).

I am replacing all my Nuts (except 2) and bolts as I go with the stainless variety…including the manifold

I have had to take the leap and get the warm up reg fixed, along with an oil leak.

Guess where the leak came from…yeah the speedo cable rubber washer. When I recalled a posting about the bit on the end falling into the box I just know what is going to happen tomorrow!! The end will fall off, into the 'box and a strip down to retrieve it will be needed ???? :banghead:

Still when its done, its done and I looking forward to a nice smooth start to the day without the embarrasing kangaroo until its warmed up!!

Superworm, are you touting your services….as you are on the Fylde you aren't too far from me!!! I am still using garages

re"Superworm, are you touting your services….as you are on the Fylde you aren't too far from me!!! I am still using garages "

H*LL NO…However, If you insist on using a garage, use an "Independent Volkswagen Dealer"… Wifey's car goes in "Volkservice", Clifton Road, Blackpool when I'm busy or lazy…great guys.

However, yer welcome to any advice which is freely given if I've been there before….or we can 'appen find a solution in Poor Richard's Rabbit Book.

One of these days I'll get to the GTI meet at Samlesbury (Myerscough Arms)..problem is I work across the road and I see enough of Samleburyduring the week!!

superworm . Where cars are concerned I think iy you have the equipment, the space and the time then its always better to DIY. There are very few jobs on a Mk1 that you can't do yourself, which is one of the attractions of the car for me.

Garages, no matter how good are always under time pressure, as time is money, so invariably things get rushed. If you do it yourself, not only do you get the satisfaction of a job well done, but after doing a few major jobs you begin to realise there isn't actually that much that could go wrong on the car you couldn't fix - a nice feeling to have.

Sadly though I think the days of DIY maintenance are drawing to a close, maybe not imminently, but it will get harder and harder to do even simple things like oil changes. Before too long I reckon many household tips will stop taking used engine oil and you will have to pay to have it taken away. Once that starts to happen then DIY starts to get uneconomic.

Still, thats even more reason to enjoy the Mk1's to the max now before some Eurocrat in Brussels decides that classic cars are "socially irresponsible"

Anyway rant over, we now return you to normal programming

Superworm,
Just taken my Cabby into Auto Volk, Chorley for the above work. I am due to get it back tomorrow. Its the first visit on recommendation so we'll see the standard of work!!

Thanks for the Blackpool tip though.

Try and get along to BAE, its a friendly bunch and there are always trips to shows to tag along to if thats your bag.

Yo Chris

I reckon your no wrong for all the reasons you note and one or two more !

Ferinstance, I have now been using my Audi A4 for nearly six months and I still don't have a clue where the oil filter is.  ( Not looked too hard but I haven't yet laid eyes on my Autobox dipstick yet either.  I have found the fusebox tho')

Like a snot (as not !) we'll soon only be permitted to replace fuses by law!

Just as a final follow up on the warm up reg saga.

The GSF replacement reg turned up today. It cost me ?135 all in with VAT and delivery which whilst pricey was still significantly cheaper than anywhere else I looked.

Its a genuine Bosch item - came in a Bosch box with 12 month warranty etc. Also they don't require an exchange unit which cuts down on the hassle factor.

I will be fitting it tomorrow (weather permitting), so hopefully it will be one less component to worry about in the future.
