Favourite wheels for Mk1?

Lee said

Hi Neil, what kind of work would I have to do to them? what is the centre bore and what would the correct size be? But, they should fit my car then? What ddd you think of them?

Thanks guys much appreciated.

hi m8,i cant remember the sizes off hand.

im pretty sure theres only 1mm in it though…

very carefull use of a round file being used in a twisting/turning motion should sort it. :P

you could probably have them machined but would cost a bit,ive seen someone fit vaux wheels on a mk2 tightly without any work but they can become seriously stuck on the hub.

id find out the numbers for definate before you make a choice,if i remember or find out ill let ya know m8.
neil.

I believe my alley cats were originally a Vauxhaul fitment. ET 33/32 though, so possibly an early vauxhaul such as a shove-it or something
the centre bores do go on and are a bit tight but only need a bit of a knock to get them off…

Just found this debate, BRILLIANT!

Time for me to add fuel to the fire….

On tin tops, the original 9 spokes really are unbeatable, or BBS RA, RS, RM are cool for the classic look.

Ronal Turbo's are so funky fresh, so i might be swayed for some of these for the summer

BBS RS for sale!!!

Has to be the original 9 spoke for me aswell. Although I do like the Ronals (as above) like the ATS Cups aswell but reckon they look nice bigger on the MK2's

For me, the 9 spokes are a classic design and look just right on the Golf GTI. Mine is standard, but if I were to upgrade the performance, I'd try and stick with the 9 spokes (doing brake mods which don't involve larger discs) as long as possible, but if I needed to run bigger wheels, BBS RS.

Preference for alloy wheels seems to be a personal thing, though. There is no right or wrong answer.

I noticed someone mentioned alleycat wheels! a bloke i work with has a seriously sweet mk1 escort that he built himself, incredible machine, has a vauxhall 2.0 ltr engine, the works. any way that has some alleycat 7x13's on with low profiles which would look amazing on a mk1, deep dish things, polished with black spokes.

he was selling with tyres for 200 and i jumped at it! :D  until i measured the stud spacing to find the ford was 112mm and mine was 104mm i think   :(  really gutted but what could i do!

so make sure the spacing is right!

if u want a really cool look on an extreme low budget…. put on some vw montreals   i got them with a mk2, really rough …until i… blasted off all the laqure down to bare metal, put them up on the lathe and polished the outer rims/faces, machined some centre caps, and powder coated all inside/backs/spokes in black

i know i spent a lot of time on them, but those montreals have some real potential with a little fettling, and little money too

show us a before and after pic Greg, i dont think i know those wheels

I stupidly didnt take any before pics, but they wernt pretty :?  someone brush painted them black, over laqure, silver paint, and oxidisation patches, no centre caps, just silicone splodged all over 8O

of all reasons i kept hold of them cos they have 'volkswagen' and the vw badge moulded into the faces which i thought would look cool if tarted up a bit, once blacked i polished the lettering back to metal which really does look cool

ill get some pics up when my bluetooth conector decides to work! :x

I think you can't beat BBS they really suit the car, suspension drop and that all you need, sit back and admire 8)

as you will know though Mr_Gti, the ride on dropped suspension and 15" (+) is a little poor to say the least.     :?

a perfect combination is 9 spokes for daily use, BBS RS for show and weekend flaunting.
