The latest Practical Classics parts compatibility guide states that the revering switch from a Scirocco 83 on, Passat 79 on, Austin Maestro 83 on, Austin Montego 84 on, Rover 216S 85 on are compatible. Not sure if these are easy to get or would provide MFA functionality :dontknow: ?

Did 'we' ever decide if the econometer-gauge (not MFA) works with this upgrade. :dontknow: Mine works OK at mo, and I?d hate to loose it in return for working reverse lights. Call me greedy but I want it all?
PS I think the rover g/bs' will use the normal non-GTI, non-MFA reverse switch

Thanks for the information Lhasa, got my reversing lights working today for the first time!
found it rather difficult to get the connectors out of the block with a pin. A frend of mine recomended using a 1.4 mm watchmakers screwdriver, which you insert into the slot and turn 90 degrees, this worked a treat and didnt bend the connector at all

Fantastic Lhasa (just found this). My reverse lights have not worked since I bought the car last year so will give this a ago. :cheer:
Quick question - my economy needle only works in 5th and I thought this was correct - can you confirm this is right?

Yes you are right. When you put it in 5th it sends a signal from this switch which turns on the ecometer.

My reverse lights haven`t worked for ages now, so am keen to install this upgrade myself.
But first off, where is the reverse switch located in the engine bay??
ops: Judging from them piccies, is it near the servo?
Also has anyone done a step by step idiots guide to doing this conversion? As wiring and me don`t really mix!

The switch is basically underneath your air box bit of the engine bay. It is on the gearbox itself.
I took the easy option and went to VW garage direct and bought the exact part. Bit more expensive but no messing needed. However this is by far an easy conversion.
Good luck.

Approx 12-18 months ago the switch was obsolete from VW? And GSF et al could only supply the MKII version hence the re-wiring to get it to work? :dontknow:

Sounds about right hence the Mk2 option.
I only got mine 6 months ago, must have been a real lucky git….maybe I got the last one 8)
Sorry.
Before I got my new one I spent ages going round scrap dealers looking for a used one, but every one I found wasn't working either.
Looks like VW are running out of spares for us now more than ever.

Forgot to post on here to say thanks for this explanation on how to do this. Works a treat (having to use a mk2 switch). :y:

Does anyone know the part number of the original switch?
I know it`s a long shot, but perhaps one of my local v-dub dealers still has one gathering cobwebs on it`s shelf. :dontknow:
i doubt it though…..

Just so you know, my local VW mechanic said there are two different types of switch on the mk1 & I could only get hold of the mk2 item. Best of luck.

My reversing lights come on when ignition turned on even when not in gear, my mfa works 100% my change up light works but works in 5th aswell (should it not go off in 5th?), guage needle dosent work (never has) is my problem the revering switch? are these problems all linked?
