If you can't find any information on the VW dealer changing the fuel filter I would try and find a good independent garage who understands the older VWs and the mechanical fuel injection system.

There may be an old school mechanic who works at your VW garage but if not most modern day mechanics only understand later cars which have an OBD port which they can plug their laptop into so it tells them what's wrong as they are unable to fault find or understand what can go wrong.

Not sure where you are in country as someone may be able to recommend a good garage who can care for your car properly or if you have some basic tools and a proper jack the simple things like service / oil change etc you can do yourself as most things are easily accessible and not covered in lots of plastic covers like modern cars…

You are very right about the dealer no longer being the right place to go. For non service items such as the cam belt changes, I have used TC garage near Gatwick in the past (I am based 10 miles south of Gatwick).

I have a QuickJack lift and all the tools (just lacking the specific knowledge on this car as I have only replaced a starter on it) and happy to work on replacing things within reason (things like fuel tanks would be a step too far). My next step is probably the spark plugs and HT leads as they will be old no doubt as well. Just locating the correct parts seems to be the biggest issue at the moment.

A clearer picture of the lose wire, which is brown/blue coming out of the sleeve with two other wires. At the back left of the engine near the manifold

Just to conclude, and thanks for the help, the car is running great now with new fuel filter, new plugs, new HT leads, new distribution cap and rotor.

Fantastic result
