MK1 Golf GTi 1st gear trouble

Check the bulkhead where the rack is mounted is not split or cracked, not unknown, esp if the suspension has been lowered. This alters the geometry and puts extra stresses into the bulkhead.

I tried some new rubber bushes and there was still a little movement, less than the old bushes, I then fitted poly bushes and there was a little less movement but I did notice more road noise inside the car....

Hi,
Just an update. After further investigation, found that one of the steering rack mounts have fractured off due to age and corrosion. I see this is a common issue with the MK1. Getting it welded and purchased new bushes. Thought while I got it apart, may as well replace all front suspension bushes. Below are some pics. Will update once all sorted.

Ok, so after getting is welded and new bushes installed, gear issues have gone. Thanks for everyone's input

Good the hear it's fixed, at least you found the crack now as if it got bigger which it would over time it could of been alot worse than just hard to find 1st gear, imagine if the steering rack came lose !!
