Complete new build! Could get interesting!
This is especially good timing as all the current projects are currently 'done' or nearing completion. Ain't it always the way!
I've been planning this for several years so far and stuff is finally getting to a point where stuff might actually get built this year. To start with there was lots of gardening to do (Odd I know but stick with it!) to get things moved and build sheds and stores to ensure I'd got room to empty original garage and enable the careful destruction of the existing garage.
Some piccies!
Reason for the renewal:
Garden a few years ago, as you see we aren't much on the way of gardeners!
Built a second shed in the area of much overgrowness
Shed was in the area of the new garage so needed to be moved
So it was jacked up and a frame built from 4x2 timbers complete with wheels, shed lowerd back down, route all boarded out and then pushed up the garden, jacked up and frame removed and placed onto it's new base.
And as we stand as of now!
As you can see I've been collecting building materials as time goes by. Sometimes you've got to grab what you can, when it's available!
So the plan is to rip out everything at the side of the house and stick in a garage through the whole length upto the edge of the grass. I might add that this is the third iteration! We've gone through right across the bottom of the garden, along the side of the garden and ended up with the side of the house.
and this is the plan
Plan is completely rip out everything at the side of the house, install anew reinforced foundation slab to build off, install some blocks as a base then build a timber frame and clad in waney edge timber to turn it into a big shed!
Thoughts?

I was up a tree the other weekend, with a handsaw, chopping it down, hence the big pile of branches in the garden. Amazing how much space a tree takes when it's not in the air
I'm lucky in that a good friend of mine is a CAD draftsman and he also plays with 3D packages and renderings and he's done all the hard work of making a flat plan into a 3D 'imaganining' of the building. Good job he's into it as he'll be helping to build it too!
I've spent the last few days trying to spec out the timbers, roof joists, connection details, lighting etc etc and it's doing my head in!
Although I'm a Civil Engineer I've spent most of my years out on site actually building bridges, roads, railways etc etc and it's been too many years since my training to be able to do all the calculations required so I'm going on gut instinct and what looks right. It's works so far and I've never had a failure yet
So if anyone knows of a good Structural Engineer please let me have their details
I'm also after ideas for lift locations, possible pit?, lighting ideas, electric roller door ideas etc etc so if anyone has any ideas or things that work well in their garage please share!

But a friend of mine when he built his 10 car garage in his garden put lights in either side of the pit. So directly under the 4 poster ramp.
More than enough even though they are fluorescent (long) strip lights, the light that you get under the car is brilliant!
Just a thought.

I use some led floodlights in my shed but they're mounted shoulder height.
Sometimes working in my shed under the car, I may as well have my eyes closed.

I'd been kinda thinking something similar. I've found some 600mm square panel lights that seem to be quite interesting.

Anyone know anything about lighting values and sources etc?
I was also wondering about floor mounted lighting to combat that very issue Roach cos we've often had the same problems

The prices might get a bit silly and as with my friends garage floor the two banks of strip lights work really well.
2 lights on both sides of the pit separated in the middle of them by roughly 40cm's or so.

Not a garage but I got sick of hacking garden bushes and trees down so built this ;
I thought building a garage was a big step! But damn me sideways. That's a nice pad mate. You abuilder by any chance?
Know any good Structural Engineers? I need to have my plans and specs checked by someone with suitable letters after their name
Any suggestions or tips?

Not a builder, advice I can give is that it will take longer than planned and cost more esp when paying others to do work. Weather can mess things up too, last July and August it seemed to rain 2 or 3 days a week!
If we didn't get planning for a house the back up plan was to build a big garage in garden similar to yours and convert existing integral garage into living space. Trying to complete all the little jobs on the new build and wishing at times a big garage would have been a better plan……..

No?
Well you should have been! Shame on you!
So I've been busy.
Climbed the holly tree, much to Lady Borednow's concern, and de-limbed it all ready for it to be felled. Took a while with a handsaw whilst nervously holding on for dear life to a rocking tree
All the limbs ended up at the end of the garden and I did a trade with a guy at work and swapped my limbs for his structural grade timber as he was going to cut it up and burn it
So just got burn the rest of it! Unless someone wants a tree project? Nearly all the bits you need to put it back together, one careful owner, glue not included!
Also been breaking concrete and taking down the rockery. Damn I hate Granite! Anyone need any?
After a chat with the Building Regs people I finally submitted the plans, 3D models and my 'Spec & Method' list. They agreed to a reasonable fee luckily as I had nightmares of them wanting thousands as they classed it as a house extension not a garage or something equally stupid!
After all we all know how Councils can be!
6-8 weeks and I should have all the approvals and agreements I need! I'm aching!

Just gotta build a shed to put all the stuff from the garage into.
Cleared all this lit from a bit of storage area
Finally cleared
Frame down
Unfortunately the area in front of the wall is full of roots etc so I had to build up the front a bit!
It'll be OK as the wife wants a veranda sticking out the front.
Beginning of the walls made up and installed. It was about 5000 degrees and a million percent humidity down here so I gave up at this point.
More next week kids. 😉
