Nice work! Are those the original arch trims?

No. The originals were tatty and I refuse to spend £500 on a set of original S1 trims even if I could find a set!

Where did you get these ones from please?

I bought them years ago. A batch were made so I got some. I assumed you could still get them today or is that not the case?

You can get them from heritage but not sure how good they are.

Gearbox finished.

Many new parts fitted including all bearings, needles, 1st/2nd Sync Hubs, 3rd/4th Sync hubs all 5 sync rings, diff bolt kit, starter motor bush, Clutch actuation parts, new reverse idler gear. Spent roughly £1000 on parts alone. Maybe over the top but as this was the actual box promoting the new 5 speed it kinda needs to be as right as it can be while the not so common parts are still obtainable.

Using an old block to set up the valve clearances. I really should make a pair of proper stands. IMG_0674.JPG

Looking stunning!

I've always fancied tackling a gearbox (I have a spare). How difficult a job is it? I'm competent with engine rebuilds, but I'm guessing it's the specialist tools that make it less of a diy job.

My rebuild thread I will try and keep up to date: here

You need a press for sure with the right size collars, plates etc etc, a bearing splitter for the main bearing that sits behind 5th, really an internal puller for the pinion taper bearing thats sat in a blind hole. You have to shim this bearing up so theres a chance you have to remove it a couple of tims in the process. I'm lucky I have access to a machine shop so can make any tooling that was needed.

have a look here for a step by step guide. http://www.brokevw.com/

I had the gaskets in stock from years ago. You can get them in the basic rebuild kits but theyre NLA from VW. well the 5th casing one is.

Looking good, hope to see it at this years AGM. How did you get on with the wheel alignment? It seems to be a dying trade nowadays what with computers, all-wheel alignment and a total lack of give a @@@@ by a lot of the tyre centres!

After 2 years of searching I finally pinned down a rare period magazine with an article from when the car was new. Someone had tipped me off when I first got the car to say they'd seen it on the front cover of an AA drive magazine but it turned out it wasn't on the front but was inside the March April 1980 edition. The article is mostly in colour too which is a bonus for a magazine of this period. I managed to zoom in on the speedo and I think it reads 1898 miles!

I've posted it here under the articles section of the website:
