Ha,ha not aged one bit….and skinnier……..that's what 20years of messing with VW's does for you!
Glad you have a copy of the mag, they were rare even back in the day as I bought every one I could lay my hands on as I was so pleased at being featured!

So, I'm the owner of your old red mk1 then Gareth! Still a lovely car!

Been doing some recommissioning on LBD over the christmas period. Rather than just tear it down I'd thought I'd see if I could get an MOT on it as it didn't seem too bad under the dust. Bit of a result yesterday!……

Engine feels good and the gearbox felt ok with no crunching into 2nd. Going to tax it and use it for a bit now.

Little update….. Been at it with the machine polisher over the last couple of weeks and its not coming up to bad. It got painted about 18 years ago by Stevie Wonder and has a few issues but at least it has shiny issues now!
I've also replaced all the glass for less scratched ones I had in stock. The previous windows had been scoured at some point! I'm kinda just making previous bad repairs better and its all starting to look a bit more respectful now.

Also having a go at the interior and have just had the seats back from the trimmers…… IMG_8166.JPG IMG_8154.JPG

Coming along a real treat Graham.

I remember looking at this one during the AGM and chatting with you about it. I even got my wife mildly interested in us owning a red Golf GTI which is quite an achievement I can tell you.

Even when it was still pretty much as you bought it I was green with envy, especially with all that history.

But even now, wow and those retrimmed seats are just amazing.
I still think even after over 4 decades of change that color and style is still the best. :)

Mind you the Mk7 GTI seats look pretty decent as well.

Please do keep the updates coming! :)

Thanks Mike. A red mk1 GTI is hard to beat. Probably my least favourite wheel of all Mk1's on this one though but as they're period they need to stay.
After driving this around for a bit and then getting back in my Mk7 its hard to believe the under pinning is from the same car.
These kids don't know they're born today with all the gadgets and driver aids! This thing has only just about got an optional AM radio!

Oh I hear you load and clear Graham.

Going to or from my Mk6, TSI, DSG Tiptronic,  7speed, Highline with all the extras I suffer to be honest, well for a few miles and then I'm good.

I love the Mk1, no PAS on 15" BBS rims and the feeling that the suspension was as nice idea that just got forgotten like a heater etc….

But somehow it works and I really do appreciate both machines for what there are and they both keep me somewhat sane! 😉

Graham,

What a difference from when I saw him at the AGM! ;)
With all that documented history has to be one of the best Mk1's around. :)

Love the passenger side mirror blanking plate. Pretty sure my brothers X-reg Golf C had a blanking plate when he got it in about '88.

Yes we replaced it with a mirror from GSF, which was prob still called German and Swedish back then.

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Wasn't sure it had the correct mirror on the drivers side as I was struggling for a picture of said side but then we found one which confirmed the later style mirror. img009-001.jpg

Another brief update…..

It popped the head gasket the day after the dubfreeze trip out. I felt it wasn't right before as it'd been using too much water but I'd initially put it down to the fact its an early car without a header tank. Removing the head firstly revealed the head bolts weren't that tight. Upon inspection sure enough cylinder no.4 has been leaking. At first I thought great as I'd read in the magazine article Brian did indeed spend money on the engine and had gotten it rebored. Pistons for these eg engines seem very difficult to find so I thought that'd be an expense I never have to go through. However, I had been seeing the odd puff of blue smoke out the back of it since driving it.
Upon closer inspection of pot no.4 I noticed some corrosion to the bore wall. What's happened is the head gasket must have been leaking prior to its layup and water has sat in that bore and created a ring of corrosion around where the piston was sat. I dropped the piston out and that looks OK but I've tried honing the corrosion out but its too deep.
So the next thing is to try and get new piston rings for these oversize pistons and have that one bore sleeved. However the pistons are a very strange oversize (80.25mm) and were made by Karl Schmidt. It seems the only way I can maybe get a set of rings is to use the 2 top rings from 80.5 piston and gap them and the bottom ring from a Austin Marina! but this is not confirmed as I type.

Also I've been told the reason the head bolts maybe loose is because the eg block can crack around the head bolt threads so firstly I need to see whether the block has issues before throwing money at it. Would be a shame if the block is scrap as its the block it left the factory with.

Trying times!!!

Nice approach. Would be a shame to have a cracked block and drive up the rebuild cost some.
