KTM 886Y Bodywork and Respray!

Post

Here we go..

So after owning her for a little more than half a year, I thought i'd finally sort out the clear bodywork issues that were arising.

From the outside, it was clear that it had previously been worked on and resprayed, and it just looked like some paint bubble…

The stripping began -  IMG_8549.JPG IMG_8559.JPG IMG_8560.JPG

As some of you probably know, you never know what you'll find when you look under the paint..

Well, check my 'scuttle', or atleast whats left go it..  IMG_8628.JPG IMG_8627.JPG

It had been Fibre Filled at some point in its life.

Looking forward (not) to seeing what other wounds we find!

A big thanks to Scott at Specialist Paintworks Dorset for taking on the old girl, and to Jake and Julien for the help stripping her!

I'll try to keep this fairly updated, but no promises :ocf_emoticons__cheer:

Do the scuttles rust like that because the screen seal has been badly fitted or just bad design.

With me been a ktm rider I like the number plate

Update time!

Wen't to see the old girl tonight…

Scott hasn't hung about, scuttles off, and you can see where its been bodged (pretty well), rather than just replacing it.

You can clearly see where its been rotting away, before it was worked on.. (WHOEVER YOU ARE, WHY DIDDNT YOU REPLACE IT! )
IMG_3117.jpeg

Moving down, the doors have about 18 meters of filler on, again rather than just replacing them, or at least dealing with the rust, they just covered it over.

IMG_0042.jpeg

A nice hole in the door too

IMG_0414.jpeg

Fuel filler cap is being replaced

IMG_3408.jpeg

Boot needs some TLC

IMG_4788.jpeg

You know seat belts? Yeah those really important things that can determine life and death? Well my rear, driver side mount was f*****! I literally ripped it out of the car, taking a nice chunk of rust with it, leaving this hole. All I can say is thank god I never needed it. (Whoever MOT'd is crazy)

So there's a little update for ya'll! I'm glad to have tackled the bodywork now, before it was too late. Some people might think its not worth spending the money on sorting it, but id prefer to do this, than see her go into a scrap pile! It'l all be worth it in the end!

Rather long overdue.. but - UPDATE TIME - I haven't given up on her… yet..

The reason that this is taking such a long time is due to ordering a roof from VW-Heratige, them telling me it was on route, then a few weeks later saying it had never been sent and was out of stock. This meant the hunt was back on for a replacement roof. Luckily, I managed to find one (in decent condition)!

Anyway..

Found a donor shell and nabbed a few pieces off that (It had a new front panel, so Scott unstitched that ready to go on mine).

On a nice quite morning we got the shell using a slightly unusual form of transport (see YouTube link below) and how do I put it… "inconvenienced" a lot of road users whilst hauling it 30 miles along single lane roads . Nothing quite like watching a Range Rover driver going mental..!

- YouTube

After that, the long wait for the roof to 'arrive' set in.. about a 2 months later, the bad news from VW-H came, resulting in weeks more of waiting!

I found a roof and sent the money, praying it would be as described :ocf_emoticons__alright:The roof finally arrived, Scott checked it over and then got back into the poor MK1..

Old, rotten roof off, new, solid one eagerly waiting to go on!

The rot..

New roof!

Now it's back on track.

Hi There

Really great to read this thread and see pictures of what your doing to KTM 886Y especially as believe it or not I owned the car between 1997-2001 and during that time completed some of the filler repairs you've had unearthed as well as a partial respray! Although the rot wasn't quite so bad back then I promise..

It would be great to see more of how your getting on with the proper resto job she deserves..

Hi Stu,

Thanks for getting in contact!

Its crazy to think how long ago you owned this!

Did you get the TSR bits done?

The resto is still happening, just slowed down due to funds! Currently deciding on what colour to get her done! :ninja:

Yeah brings back a lot of memories! it was totally standard when I had it, bought the car when I was 18 years old and working as an Apprentice panel beater at Volkswagen in Bedford.

We took it as a trade in from an old boy and nobody was really interested in it so I snapped it up obviously!!

It was pretty scruffy and I really wanted to give it some TLC so I managed to pursaude my boss to let me take a weeks holiday and bring it in.

During that week I stripped it down, flatted all exterior panels, done some repairs :ohigh build primed the lot, resprayed and refitted. As I was on a tight time frame and only earning £30 a week at the time I couldnt afford to replace much and had to repair over existing filler from previous damage..
Also Ive got to own up to the fibreglass scuttle repair :shake:I nearly had a heart attack when I pulled the screen rubber out…all I could do at the time was make good.

Ive just dug out some old pics which I'll try and upload later

Did you buy the car somewhere down south? I'm now living down in Poole so dont think I'm that far from where you are!
