Did mk1 golfs come with a green or black engine block?

Black

Hi,

I've got green blocks on my diesels…

Robin

Really? Blimey, missed that one. I was thinking GTI but did think all were black anyway.

Yea I think some of the Irish mk1's had green block too (dentdoc had a theory on it) I thought they were all black, I'm going to paint the block satin black with an aluminum finish on the head and aux bits.

Cheers Hugh.

Doing something similar as we speak.

Block in black, oil cooler, WUR etc in silver but leaving the head in original, just wire brush / wool it and clean it down.

2nd coat is on , 3rd coat tonight and the Aux bits are already completed.

Here's mine I'm doing on my project thread at the moment.

Like this now using hammerite spray and Halfords vht aluminium finish.

Only thing is the vht has to cure when the engine is running which ain't much good for builds as it just come off in ur hand when dry, so iv used a heat gun which has cured the problem!! Cured get it? Lol

Hi guys,

Sorry to drag this thread up but I was wondering how I can cure use VHT paint if the engine is out the car? Is it possible if not being fitted for months or should I use something else? After a Matt black for block, rocker cover and exhaust manifold.

I think I can BBQ the manifold but not sure about block.

Thanks

You can just paint, mount and bake later. If you run your engine at normal working temp it'll do the same.

Not sure if I get you though..

You can use an industrial heat gun (hair dryer).  This will warm up the pain and the block to get the paint to cure.

I have also used Quartz/Halogen lighting to warm things up, the Radiant heat from the lamps can get things toasty.  They are the Same lamps that I used to heat my Garage up to 88 degrees when I work on Vert tops in the winter.

My Brother and I used to use the Charcoal grill to heat up Manifolds and such, but the issue is that you have to keep the paint about a foot off of it so it doesn't get a direct heat….If the heat is too close then you can get burned or blister the paint so you have to start over.

We would usually wait for Mother to leave for work or somewhere, then we would use the oven.

It was easier to control the heat.

My Brother bought a large Electric Oven from a Restaurant that was going out of business, and he uses it for Painting, and Powder Coating.  He can put 2 wheels in it at once….

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Yup VHT will work fine.

No need to cure it as it'll go off sufficiently until you run the engine.

I'd probably avoid going black on the block as it makes it very difficult to spot any oil leaks etc.
