Just starting to work out if we put the car on a 'Car Train' in Vienna and where we can get it too at a reasonable price.
Distance V Cost
Time

This is just the outbound journey as I've decided to take the shortest way over and the long way back.
As mentioned before, I must minimize the chances of problems getting over for the AGM, as I'd hate to miss it!

If we hit problems on the way back so be it.
Delayed heading home or get stuck half due to some mechanical problem other than the shit hitting the fan accessing parts for example, we will not be under the same time pressure. A day or two late getting back to work, so what!

The first problem I've encountered is I can't just put the car on a train in Vienna and get out for example in Paris or on the coast.
I've found I can go Vienna to Salzburg, change there and it seems at the moment I can go on to Düsseldorf.
But that's two separate tickets, I can't combine them into one journey.
Or we can go Vienna direct to Hamburg or Vienna to Livorno, Italy but what good is that!  :banghead:
That's about as useful as a chocolate coffee pot.  :dontknow:

Going to keep looking at different options but the governing factors will always remain, wear and tear on the car and the overall cost of the entire trip!

Looked at going Antwerp to Hull by Ferry the other day and nearly had kittens. Almost a nine hour trip and 450 GBP return.
Got to do better than that!

If anyone has any experience doing this type of trip and wants to offer some advice I'm always willing to listen,
Do we have a 'Travel Agent' in the house?

I make similar trips on an annual basis on the bike. This is much cheaper than taking the car on the ferry, but I'd suggest you look at the deals on the chunnel. If you time your crossing well, you can get a return car for less than £100.  I turned up way too early and the guys down there are pretty relaxed and let me get the next train as long as I went in with the trucks. No issues there (I had a roof box too)
Avoid the peak crossing times and use the chunnel.
And if you're serious about the alpine passes, look no further than: Stelvio, Furka, Grimsel, Susten, Giao (?), all free and amongst the highest and most spectacular. They are hard work on a bike (but you do tend to press on a bit harder with a big bike as opposed to the Mk1, or at least I do…).  I think it'll work out much the same as we do on the bikes.  Budget for £100 per day all inclusive.  Your downside is your paying for two, but there are plenty well advertised B&B/pensions/chambres etc across your whole route.  Unless it's a big issue, I'd genuinely avoid Paris. Any big city will cost you four hours just getting through it.   Best bits will be the high passes.
Whatever you decide, it'll be a trip and a half.  One every MK1 cabby should do. Enjoy.

I've planned my route!
i was sat here thinking that would be an awesome road trip, so I thought I'd make my own route up!

I'm stopping in munich to go to BMW world, then on to stuttgart to go to porsche, then up to dusseldorf becsause I know a nice bar there (schumacher Alt), then maybe be call at my bosses house in Antwerp maybe for a cuppa, then upto dunkirk(don't want to be long in france to many driving rules), then up to uttoxeter.

Thanks for all the tips!

I'm still at the gathering Info stage at the moment.
The one thing I have decided is that we will do the shortest trip over and the long one back.
For the simple reason that I can be late getting home but not arriving late for the AGM!

As for Paris, yes it is a nightmare for cars and credit cards but it's a promise I've made to my Son Daniel (he will be 15) and a promise is a promise.
As for the Alps, I'm looking to pick a route that takes us along and over but not to take in the highest passes.
To be honest I'm a little nervous about taking the Cabbie over them for fear of over heating and brake failure!
If I was on my own then that would be a different matter.

So in simple terms I'm looking at taking two days to get over and say three of four to get back.

Should be a good crack which ever way we do the trip with the AGM in the middle on the sandwich.
It can't be bad!

It's a fair point Smudger,
I used to drive the "Road to Hell" a lot, so I thought I'd just keep a check on the traffic flows around it on my arrival back in Blighty and then go with the flow, so to speak.

But now I've just remembered that it bought for the car one of the early Blaupunkt TravelPilots 2005 model and it doesn't have live traffic Info.  :banghead:

Bought it because although it's not old enough (there was none in 1990) it's kind of in keeping with the car and the Blaupunkt Bremmen stereo I bought for it.
It doesn't look out of place if you know what I mean.

You too 'smudger'.

Well it's 5:50am on Boxing Day morning and I'm already looking at Google maps.
I'm even thinking about doing the trip without a GPS unit just for the hell of it!

Buy myself a good map and I can teach my Son to use one and to navigate at the same time.
Should be a laugh.

I like a challenge!

What about spare parts for the car just in case the worst happens?

Well Mate, there is a bit of bravado in that statement.
Maybe the device finds it's way into one of my two bags but I'm not telling my Son that.  :starwars:

As for parts, I've been thinking about it for a while.
We have to carry enough stuff for the two of us and the car, in case the worst happens.
It could well be a 10 or 12 day trip, more likely the latter.

I plan to us my MK1OC sports bag for parts. what will fit in there will join us.
Plus a range of tools.

I've started to form an idea in my head as to what to take but it's my first road trip in my Mk1 further than about 100 miles from home.
So if you or anyone else want to start the ball rolling by adding or changing this list, all the advice will be well received!

Off the top of my head.

Water
Oils etc…
Plugs and spark plug cables
Dizzy, cap and arm
Spare bulbs (mandatory) here
Full set of fueses
Foam tire inflater (not the best thing, I know)
Thermostat
WD40, the love of my life for the last Forty years
Insulating tape
Gaffer tape
Bungee's
Rubber bands (trust me on that one)
Super Glue and lots of it
Bon Jovi on the MP3 player, 'Living on a Prayer'

Front brakes have only done about 8k of easy driving and the back ones will be checked before we leave (replaced if in any doubt).
I have full European Recovery, so if the worst comes to the worst we might turn up on a trailer for the AGM.

But you know the best thing about for me is that I'm in the only place I'd ever want to be when it comes to skill, knowledge and good old friendship!

I've driven over 5 times in the last 18 years but I feel I need to really narrow down where I cross to get to the AGM and where to cross back to have the best drive to Paris.

Looking on a map it's a no brainer but two oneway tickets make it very expensive indeed!

Mike & Daniel.
