Monkey's 1981 Golf GTi 1.6 project - rust is lighter than carbon fibre

Got the wheels swapped today, they've all got decent new tyres on them and been powdercoated too, wasn't too keen on red/white but should look pretty decent when all sorted and on the mk1

Went to the car booty today, look what I found for a tenner, badge and metal vw logo are near mint, trims are straight and original paint plus only one clip out of the lot is broken.


Should clean up noicely
He had a bunch of other parts including a campaign filler cap for a fiver, centre console gti badges etc. got his number so if anyone needs them just ask

It's only a 15 minute odd journey from yours so you better go! Always got decent car stuff there, lots of car parts there too till I pick it clean  

Speaking of clean, i refurbed the grill stripes and gave the badge a quick t-cut. Stuck some wash and wax in the chemical tank of the pressure washer and gave the grill a damn good clean! Came out pretty well i think.

The grill looks pretty mint! Great find.

Yeah the bodywork is bad but easy to repair as it's just flat panels. Good news is that the engine isn't the standard strangled 330bhp 7.2. Straight through pipes, high compression block, twin four barrel carbs, edelbrock manifold and had some mopar cams to fit in the loft but never had time to fit. It's basically a pre 1970 425bhp engine now with extras, with cams it would be around 475ish  

But the noise…..oh lawd jesus the noise it makes  

Very nice indeed, I do like these! Will you be fully resurrecting it now?

Talking of noise, I followed 5x DeTomaso Panteras in to a car park today!!  The noise was awesome, and the burble from them all so loud it set off car alarms on parked cars!

Just been doing a few things today, took the bumpers off to have a looksee for any rust, thankfully none, no piccys though  

Took the other half to try and get her involved with the mk1, didn't end well when I was taking the bumpers off

"Sam i'm taking the bolts off, you're holding onto the bumper yeah?"
"Yeah sure i've got it"

So that ended up with the bumper falling on my face, think i've popped something in my nose and the blood wasn't stopping for a good while.

Going back to the garage soonish though, preferably without any company, so will get some pics sharpish!

Cyprus next monday though so will be fiddling with the RS too
