Get new, comes with 1 year garantee, whereas 2nd hand you don't know what is right or wrong with it, saves the hassle and no worries, 200 is about right for a new weber considering 800 from stealers for a pierburg

Go to Crazyquiff and let him know if yours is an Automatic or Manual - Accelerator cable fittings are slightly different.  They are an absolute doddle to fit (< 1 hour) and come from Crazyquiff's with full fitting kits, gaskets, properly jetted and with full destructions. It even comes with a choke cable. They come set up for whichever VW golf you have so you don't have to worry if it was initially meant to be fitted to some obsure Nova or whatever.

 Crazyquiff's Mk1 Golf

TraceyCab is a satisfied customer…her 1800 automatic cab now runs like a "well-oiled sewing machine"

Replace the "intermediate mounting flange" bonded rubber diddy while your at it!!

Incidentally, I fitted a "TR7" choke switch via Rimmer Bros which I used to illuminate a bulb fitted in the space above the Handbrake/Fluid Level Warning light on the RHS of the dash.

Triumph TR7 Accelerator & Choke Controls - Choke at www.rimmerbros.co.uk

Some Golfs had a properly adapted H/Brake warning light which has the correct "Choke" indicator….if you find one!

If you go the evilbay route, ensure it is the correct one for your car (Engine Sizewise and Manual/Auto), comes with the adapter plate and fitting kit and maybe get a recon kit from the Weber specialists

etc

Incidentally 2 - you may be advised to advise your Insurance Company about the change - didn't ought to cost you any more if you tell 'em its a paltry  32/34DMTL

Before everyone gets carried away. :)

What makes you think the pierburg is knackered? Sometimes a strip and clean out will solve some carb problems. If the autochoke doesnt work are you sure its set correctly? Sometimes it can be the simpliest thing, might just be getting stuck, or there could be a split in the vacuum system.

I'm not too sure the weber is any better, as I have had both, but on different cars. I see a bit of top end torque on the weber, but that maybe accounted by by different jets.  :dontknow:

I'd want to be 100% certain it was the carb before replacing it.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the replies. Madferret , i do think mine needs a strip down. what i was going to do was take mine off, go through the very detailed how to and try and get it working correctly first. if no joy then go down the weber route.

I called a carb rebuilders (carburettor exchange) who are near me and this is one of the only carbs they don't rebuild :(

but I will give it a go and see how i get on.

Get the Haynes Carb Manual (I got mine from Amazon) its very detailed and explains things very well. I had to read it a couple of times though  :D

Plus side is that it has the Weber 36TLP, and also the Pierburg 2E2 in it also so if you ever change car or carb you'll have the books for those too.

webber isnt any better than a functioning 2e2, just a functioning 2e2 mis hard to find   ive covered pretty much everything that can go worng on them plus how to test and fix in my faq, but sprares arnt nearly as easy to get as they were when I first wrote it. used to see MK2s in scrapper all the time back then!  nowadays its all mk3s. webber is a great and simple piece of kit, just make sure you get a full fitting kit or you'll get annoyed with it very quickly!

Can you fit a 2e2 to a 1500? I've got a carb and manifold, but it looks a bit different to me.

ooooOOOOOooo I might have to have a go at that, presuming that they'd not be too much difference in the jetting, as the 1500 is a de-stroked 1600 and 25cc per piston isn't that much really. The 2E2 should be a good carb I would've thought from looking at it in the manual.

its a brilliant thing when working, my old 1.6 was so smooth and always idled purfectly no matter what the weather.  main thing is as i say, its a complex beastie and finding spares can be tricky, when i did mine i was fortunate enough to stumble upon a classified post for a box of 3, that really helped me get my head around how they worked and how to test various bits.  plus back in 2003 mk2s would come into my scrapper almost every week, so i had a endless supply of donours for random wee bits.

So a Mk2 1.6/1.8 engine I presume, will fit? What about the water ways?

ah slight issue, the 1.5 doesnt appear to have a coolant chanel from head to the inlet! there do appear to be coolant channels to it though, so these can be directed to the carb only at least.  Only thing is the 2e2 manifold wont be getting coolant flow, but not convinced it will make a massive difference anyway? you may even be able to fit the 2e2 onto the older inlet if you fit a 2e2 flange.

Also, you might be able to drill the 1.5 head to get to a coolant waterway, but this is not something I am sure of, so dont try it on a good head!

The entire engine will drop right in, advantage with that is you can use the later MK2 flange with holes for thermoswitches, since the MK1 inline thermoswitch holdery thing is discontinued. Disadvantage is its 1.6/8, so more expensive road tax than the 1.5.

I think i'll just make up some kind of adapter plate (might even be one already avaiable) and fit it to the 1.5 manifold.
