I love stories like this  :D

There's nothing like seeing a "barn find" being brought back to good health!

I will be keeping a close eye on the Tdi conversion - if I change out my 1.6 diesel, I think it's got to be for a Tdi too…

Couple of more pics for you .
Been cleaning the boot today ,just to see what the situation is .
Seems to be in pretty good shape bar some light surface rust .
The rear panel is good also ,so happy days .

Im gonna do the Tdi conversion a bit later ,but im being aided by some talented guys here in Coventry .
Been a sured they can help me achieve a TDI or MTDI conversion ,depending on what i want horse power wise .
Will keep a good log of the conversion as and when we do it .

I got to wait to borrrow a pump to remove the old diesel from the tank ,will be getting that tomorrow .
Im in between jobs at the mo ,so the  engine conversion is on the back burner  for now :(  .
Will be looking at the body first to make sure shes structurally sound  .
Want to clean and treat the underside first ,just to make sure theres no surprises lurking down there .
Hoping to drive around with the 1.6 for the time being as cash is a little tight at the mo .
Some time early next summer will hopefully be right time for the conversion (need to do more info gathering ).
If the body proves to be solid then i will defo be doing it .
The question will be  130bhp reliable or 200 bhp monster ???.

Its easy to get impressed with the large numbers ,but how drivable would a little golf be with 200 horses and large ammounts of torque  on a day to day basis .
You would need to gather a whole host of other expensive parts if you wanted to use it with intent
Was told by Vince at stealth racing that 150bhp in a mk1 golf would be plenty .
Its all about power to wieght ratio and being able to get the power down .
Too much power and you will be wheel spinning ,while the lesser powered vehicle has left you behind .
Would love to ride in a sorted  1.9 td conversion like Berts ,just to decide which way i want to go and how much power would be just right .

its the torque with a diesel mate, mines plenty for me,and theres more i can do but its quick and reliable now,i may just intercool one day if i get time

Great to hear a little history about the car .
Its still got the willenhall coachcraft in stourbrigde sticker on it .
My mate brought 12 yrs ago and it was a van then .
I believe he converted it to a car (not a great convesion by the way ).
The  4 speed gearbox packed up not long into his ownership ,so he fitted a 5 speed one .
About this time i had just completed a body work course 10 saturday mornings in total .
Was talking to him about it and expressed i needed some practice .
He offered his car .
He brought it in Saturday ,we prept it all of saturday and sprayed it sunday .
My gun had a air leak and the paint went on a little dry ,but he was happy.
We chose this colour as the original was a little dull and this was similar .
He used it for another year ,then parked it up for approx 10 yrs
I  brought it and am now starting to work on it .

Today i removed the old diesel from the tank, and inspected the bottom of the tank .
Apart from a couple of 2cm rust spots the rest seemed clean .
My filler neck on the other hand seems to have flakey rust on the inside ,looks like ill have to do something with that .
I put some fresh diesel in the tank and placed some fresh diesel in the fuel filter .
Cranked it over with the help of another car with jump leads ,no joy .
I did something a little naughty ,i got my car towed around the block a few times and it started up for about 30 second .
It also let out a lot of black smoke initially , but cleared up a little the more times it ran .
All i can say that the engine seems to be ok  :o but requires further running to clear the old fuel in the line.
Im sure once this happens the engine will be fine FINGERS CROSSED   .
