1.9TD conversion options

i dont see the big deal, im putting a 1z in my citi and the ony isue so far is the lack of chip in the key - means i need a remap to make it run ;) kill two birds with one stone

im trying to document the conversion thouroughly (excuse my spelling)  so hopefully if im succesfull there will be a "how to tdi" on here  :)

by all means do a diesel conversion but it will cost £££ (not too many if you get some bargains and plan wisely) and you won't really recoup the money on fuel savings unless you do a lot of mileage.

GTD - 45mpg
Tuned 130 bhp GTD - 45mpg

GTI - 30 mpg?
Tuned GTI <20mpg?

Fuel cost based on 8000 miles per year

GTD - £916
GTI - £1,410

Making sense yet?

I've no idea the cost involved in getting a GTI to 120 brake - but I can get a 1.9td or a 1.6 td to that level for pennies.

Lets not mention torque. ;)

Mim - the issue with TDI conversion is not just the added hassle of the ECU but the cost of tuning a TDI, this may not be an issue though and the TDI has less clatter and more MPG, which is only a good thing.

I get a genuine 42mpg out of my 2.0 16V petrol GTI if driven gently. I imagine a mildly tuned GTI (so, same bhp as a tuned GTD for comparison) is going to achieve about the same too. If you drive a GTD gently, I'd say 50mpg is possible (I think your 45mpg is a little conservative). So re-doing the sums:

diesel - £843
petrol - £1046

So that's £203/year saving.

On a long motorway run, with a standard GTI, I've seen 50mpg, so don't simply assume that diesel has a massive fuel economy advantage. The Mk1 Golf is a light car and driving gently and just going with the flow of traffic rather than overtaking everything, produces really good fuel economy whichever fuel. Diesel will always have an advantage, due to its engine design being naturally more efficient; but that advantage is marginal.

I thought I was being optimistic for the petrol and conservative for the diesel to be honest!

The figures I had for the petrol were real world experiences of several people driving 1.6 and 1.8 8V petrol engines in mk1 shells and cabbys - both injected and carbed.

The figures I had for the diesel were based on over 12 months of fuel logging by myself in my GTD'd caddy - no driving like an old man in a hat, mostly hooning around like a fool.  :D

Even with your figures - £200 a year / 8000 miles, how expensive do you think diesel conversions are? I've never paid over £150 for a complete engine.

Cost depends on many factors, the main one being how much you value your own time! Its not the engine itself which is the main cost, its the little bits that all add up....

I think its time us gasser boys bite the bullet and realise that this diesel stuff is goona give us a run for our money…literally.

Fuel ecomnomy and performance when you need it…fantastic!

rov716y did a turbo diesel conversion and then did several runs at Santa Pod, the result being a 1/4 mile time exactly the same as a standard GTI. You'd have to look back at his previous build thread(s) etc to see the parts used, work involved and relevant tweaks but it was a reasonably well done, thorough conversion.

theres two ways to look at it i suppose the 1z engine im using`s 90hp but to get it to run withought the chip (key) i need to get it remapped after a quick look around (cant remember exactly) some companies reconed 130ish bhp and 220nm torque and the 110hp standard has a better turbo and manifold - which i think can be chipped to just under 150bhp and more torque again. they also recon the fuel eficiency improves but im not holding my breath. thats on standard everything apart from map. bigger compressor mk1 gti inlet manifold and shove the EGR up my Ferdinand Porsche`s anus…

i cant see how its more costly pound per hp - if you do the conversion yourself as a project anyway.

Wake up and smell the soot boys!

All the big manufacturers are offering 'hot' models with oil burners installed - that was unheard of 15 years ago.

The PD engines are getting massive figures out of them.

I'll be quite happy with my 150hp 1.6 diesel engine…..

Isnt that because it was just a standard TD engine? 90/80bhp? GTI being 110bhp?

Maybe regcheesemans 130bhp would have done alot better.

rovs aaz is 75bhp standard as mine was

any mk3 imobi unit with key and ring will work :dontknow:

I think rov tuned his but unsure how. azim (the original poster) asked about the 1.9TD, which is what rov's was. If reg has 1/4 mile printouts or a dyno plot, I'd be interested to see them, since the 1.6TD is reportedly more tuneable.

it has to be matched with the ecu aparently and i wasplaning on getting it remapped eventually anyway  8)

they plug in the loom not not the ecu   :dontknow:

I thought rov's was tuned? Either way, is 1/4 mile much of a measure? Surely the factors of weight, grip, reaction times, gearing etc have as much to play as a few bhp here or there.

If reg has 1/4 mile printouts or a dyno plot, I'd be interested to see them, since the 1.6TD is reportedly more tuneable.

No dyno prints, I was using the SOP dyno which has no printout facility.

The 1.6 is not really any more tuneable - it normally has a better pump and larger turbo as standard. The shorter stroke makes it a lot more 'driver' friendly.

The next 1.6 will have 1.9 head, VNT turbo, and a hybrid pump (AAZ body, GTD boost enrichment and bigger TDI pump head. 8)

the loom prettymuch revolves around the ecu ;) pin 61 (grey and white) on the ecu is the imobaliser feed…

Do you know what sort of signal the imobiliser sends to the ecu?

Any mk3 imobili box that sits behind the clock cluster and the key ring will work trust me,even vw say that the mk3 imobil is rubbish,mk4 is a diff game, a lot better coded to the ecu   :dontknow:
