1.9TD conversion options

Im getting my mk1 diesel in a couple of weeks time .
Its got the standard 1.6 diesel engine in at the moment.
I quite fancy putting the 1.9td engine as a replacement to make it smoother and a little more nippy .

My  dads got a Skoda Falecia on a X reg 2000 with a 1.9 diesel  lump in it .
Its lovely and smooth to drive ,but would be better with a turbo .

My question is ,which cars came with the suitable 1.9td engines ?.

Most VW group cars from the 90s. MK3 Golfs, SEAT Toledos, Some Skodas? Passats, Ventos.

Bert will be along soon to explain more and show us pics of his pride and joy.

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Is the felica a TDI or a TD?

A swap from NA diesel to TD is easy, TDI is far more work

TD swap needs engine mount swap

A custom downpipe

Fuel filter relocated by fitting the bracket upside down (moves the filter towards scuttle)

TD are far easier to tune.

Post a piccy of the pump and I can tell you what engine it is and how tweakable it is.

Isn't there an issue with the engine mounts, the TD can accept the Mk1 engine mount bolted on, while the TDI doesn't, and would need the mount cut off the donor car's subframe and welded onto the Mk1 chassis in the wishbone mount area?

+ dealing with the ECU for the fuel control, including probably an immobiliser defeat.

TD (mechanical fuel pump and stuff) sounds much more inviting from a DIY prospect, especially since its reasonably tunable.

Not heard of engine mount probs?? VW engines normally fit like lego.

You can make the TDI mechanical - but it's far from straightforward

its reasonably tunable.
My last 1.6 made 130 brake for next to nothing, the next one will make 150 for a little outlay, 200 is possible.

Similar will come from the 1.9, but's it's less fun as an engine.

How did you get the engine from 80bhp to 130bhp (I assume it was a 1.6 TD)?

And how is 150 or 200 possible from a 1.9 TD?

I'd have thought the turbo would run out of puff at well below those levels, even after fiddling with. Can't really increase the rpm that much, if at all. And simply adding and adding more fuel, leads to smoke, not more power, once you're reached a certain point.

Assume it was a GTD (more aggressive pump and injectors), turbo pushed to 20psi, modified original pump

And how is 150 or 200 possible from a 1.9 TD?

Who said 1.9? - i was still talking 1.6

150 needs more boost and more fuel - 200 needs even more boost and even more fuel.

You are now well into top end work, uprated engine components etc. 1.6's have pushed 200 at the crank, but not for a daily

I'd have thought the turbo would run out of puff at well below those levels, even after fiddling with.

The GTD has two different size turbos - even with the smaller one 20 - 25 psi is attainable

Can't really increase the rpm that much, if at all.

Of course you can it's known as a governor mod.

Yes, you cannot burn extra fuel without extra air. Let it breathe and turn the wastegate up.

Dyno plots or it never happened! LOL

My S.O.P dyno has no attached printer.

However maybe a video of someone elses…1.6 D with non standard turbo pump and injectors - 160 ish IIRC

http://www.youtube.com…gqvB9xU4lQQ&feature=email

Or maybe a printout from a tweaked but standard component engine

Or maybe even a little movie clip from a dyno run with a 1.9 tuned -255hp / 450nm…

http://www.bilgalleri.…vid_vis.asp?VideoID=19064

Oh yeah… standard internals and 13.24 on the 1/4

The Felecia engine is a straight diesel ,and its going strong in the old mans Skoda .

As far as i know the Falecias didnt come in TD versions .

I need to know which version of the Td engine is suitable ?
I was led to belive the Aaz code was the one to use as the pump is cable controlled .

Am i correct in the above assumption or are there others that are suitable
such as ABL code ones .

The AAZ is the 1.9TD which the scene seems to favour. There are also various 1.6TD options including the GTDs - (RA and SB engine codes)

The 1.6 is a much better engine, feels more alive.

The ABL is TDI and therefore 'fly by wire'

You have to be careful with AAZ engines as they come in various guises including the pitiful ECO which uses a fual pump from an non turbo engine and is restricted in it's potential, Basically there needs to be a 'flying saucer' on top of the fuel pump, itr needs to have a domed not flat top and there should be as few wires as possible going to the pump.

Lack of EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) is a good thing too.

Are you saying i should opt for a 1.6 gtd engine over a 1.9TD .

You say they are more fun ,whichprobably means they rev more freely .
Which vehicles did they come in ?.

I would like the best of both worlds ,more power(120-150bhp) and reasonable fuel economy  when cruising.

Will the 1.6gtd offer me  the best combonation or a 1.9td ?.

The 1.6's came in mk 2 golfs and similar era passats

The 1.9 is mk3 era

The 1.6 is short stoke and revier

Best of both worlds? Either really; get what is available. The AAZ is the scenes favourite so the prices tend to be higher than the 1.6

I would get over 50 mpg out of my tuned 1.6

My standard eco AAZ gave 60 on a run and would return over 50 once it had been tweaked.

What is the difference between engines in a  1.6td and 1.6gtd mk2 golf??.

Would it cost much to do the seals on a slightly smoky turbo ??

Post

The GTD has a water cooled turbo and intercooler (as does the GT passat)

The GTD supposedly has a more aggressive pump head and better injectors, but I've reason to doubt that in UK spec.

Seals have probably gone because bearings are on the way out? You can get rebuild kits fairly cheap but I don't know how much a pro rebuild would cost.

I think you got me sold on a 1.6GTD engine .

What other bits along with the engine and box would i need to complete the conversion ? .

How much would it cost to get it upto 120-150 bhp ?.

Could do with an update on this.

A GTD faster than a GTI??? Bonkers…its a diesel!!

Don't worry, it never happened. The GTD has 80bhp, the GTI has 112bhp. The 1.6 turbo diesel is very tunable, so no doubt it could achieve more than 112bhp, but then so could tuning a GTI, etc etc. If you're simply chasing the highest horsepower, stick with some kind of petrol engine conversion, but if you want a bit more power + decent economy + something a bit different, then by all means do a diesel conversion but it will cost £££ (not too many if you get some bargains and plan wisely) and you won't really recoup the money on fuel savings unless you do a lot of mileage.

i got 115 out of mine very easy,1.9 aaz very easy to fit and play, goes very well compared to the 1.6D that was in,good torque too, this is the key
