I'm stripping it in the parking bay behind my house  :P

Got a friendly garage about 30 seconds walk away so any big stuff will get done in there if they'll let me borrow the space. Obv the roof is staying on, just stripping everything else ;)

Welding course starts in a few weeks too! Think this summer will be good :D

welding course would be good! gonna get my bro or graney to teach me the basics then set about my golf prob start with easy things like blanking the rear wiper and filling holes in the bulkhead then move on to more major bits once i've got the hang of it……. don't look that hard does it  :?

The first thing anyone says to me about it is "It just takes practise" so I reckon I'll be able to pick it up.

I'm well prepared for my first few weeks efforts to look like bum grapes though :D

Yeah, you're right matt, practice makes perfect with welding, it's best to practice with unwanted metal first to get a gauge on how to set the welder up for different metal thicknesses, too high a current and you'll blow a hole, too low and there'll be no penetration!

But it doesn't take took long to get the hang of!

Good luck with the stripdown, you'll have to give us a shout when you're up next, you can come give us a hand!

Just a couple of more pics, went down today to paint up the last few things, god we have gone through some paint in this thing!

Anyways, after the head was painted up, just couldn't resist mocking it up to get the full effect! Ha Ha

And with the rocker cover:

Pretty crap pics off me phone, which looks like it has oil on the lens or summit! Lol!

Could only mock it up cos i haven't got the new headbolts yet and i need a shim for one of the buckets for cylinder 4 as it's got some deep scratches in it (see previous pics). Thought i could just dress up the scratches with some emery and flip it over but it looks like the underside has got a raised part in the centre, possibly to help it locate better??

Will be back there the morra (lift depending, can't wait to get this cast off me bloody foot!) and will be updating when there's things a changing!

Well, finished the engine re-build, finally after some troublesome bolts for the new oil pump, old ones too short! Got the full thing assembled.

Started by building up the head and fitting to the block:

Then torqued it down and checked valve gaps, they seem ok of a 31 year old car, but will have to re-check them when the engine is warm (according to haynes!). Then fitted rocker cover with new domed nuts, looks pretty cool like.

Then put the oil pump in and fitted the sump gasket and sump. Went to fit the timing belt and had a wee bit of bother. Put the timing marks to where they should be and i couldn't get belt on. It would go on if the cam was moved slightly out of line nee bother nice and tensioned. Have been told by russ (mechanic extrodinaire! :lmao: ) that it can be to do with the age of the engine, or the valve opening. We've just put it on for now and we will check everything again another day cos it was 10pm and we were sick.

Been to see the car too and there has been more progress, set a deadline of 4 weeks so it's getting exciting!

And i've got me cast off me foot finally, i can drive! Woo woo! Back to work on Monday tho.

Till next time!

Thought i'd drop a little update on how angus is getting along! Been a while cos i've been back at work so i'm spent when i get in! Lol!

Tommy has kept to his word and steamed ahead with the metalwork, and with amazing results too!

Heres a few pics:

Front of inner wing. (loving the curved detail, you ain't even gonna see it either!)

New wing tops!

Other bit's been done too;

Found another hole:

Duh.

Also got down the garage and started cleaning and painting my donated (in exchange for money) brake callipers, so the wheels will fit better cos i won't need a git massive spacer! And not to mention the fact that my old ones were shot, i can't believe it was even stopping!

Bit of wire brush action

Took ages to get it apart! lol!

The new colour (cheers for the idea russ 'leepu from chop shop' prior) Ha Ha!

Should go with the seats nicely! Provided i can source the material! Yet another thing to do!

Oh well, till next time!.thumbup.

The project over ran MASSIVELY by about a year   . mainly due to work commitments and me and adam both bought houses and I'm soon to be a dad!!!

Anyway I'll need to grab some photos off Adam or he might post some  :dontknow: . Heres a few piccys though to get you drooling……

angus is looking great, hard work looks to be paying off

there's no such thing as tidy wiring in a carb mk1 lee! most of the stickers are from the original owner and graney/adam is quite adamant they are staying. part of its history shall we say.

hard work has payed off 16v all runs fine after the rebuild has been driven a short distance (1 mile maybe). only reason its not mot'd is we are waiting for the good weather probs be sometime later this month.

little snag list to get through with it. uprating the brakes to gti units to get the wheels to fit as they catch on the old girling and teeves units few daft bits to fit and the rip in the drivers seat to repair. adam did look at getting it all retrimmed in blue leather but decided the old cloth interior would be fine with a bit tlc and more in keeping with the car plus a damn sight cheaper!

I mentioned that i'd updated the thread to adam so hopefully he'll pop in and post some more indepth photos…….
