Got the car up on the ramp to drop the engine and box, came out easily, 10 minutes if not less! Saying that, we have taken pretty much everything else out, twas only the mounts keeping it in!
Been back down today to do a litle bit more but it's too cold down there today, besides, from the morra i'm back at work till sunday, then i'm off up to scotland for a couple of days so we should be back on with it by tuesday.
Russ (rustys_MK1) will be putting up some more pics later when i drop me camera off at his, i've lost the lead for it otherwise they would be on here with this post!
Cheers for all the interest from you all on the site, we will try and make this thread as detailed as possible, cos i now i like reading other peoples so i wanna amke mine a good one for you lot to read!!
Till next time!!

So as was said earlier engine had been stripped of pretty much all ancilaries……. observe.

Having the engine stripped bare and access to a four poster ramp made the job of dropping the lump a piece of cake 8). Must say very lucky to have access to Graney's uncle's garage so much love Jimmy even though you won't read this

Once the lump was out cracked on getting rid of the black goop (been told it could be something called schwarz? :dontknow: ). Word of warning when spraying thinners all over the place a lack of masks gets you rather light headed :? even our project mascot was feeling the fumes and had to take five…….

One for the monkey lovers…. :notworthy:
and the results of me and graney huddled in an engine bay for a few hours…..

All seems to be solid and rust free under the goop, so even though its a pain in the arse it has definately done its job!
Finding spraying a bit of thinners on it softens it up then scrape it off with either a stanley blade or srew driver (in awkward areas) and finally clean the residue off with yet more thinners. if anyone has a better idea please let me know.
got a few better pics now of the rust so will just thro them up here too…..

Guy thats doing the welding doesn't seem phased by the rot. he has obviously seen a lot worse on the aircooled stuff hes use to working on :dontknow: .
I'm quite pleased with the amount we have gotten done as we have only really spent four or five days at the garage. Once this goops off and we have cleaned up some of the surface rust it should be ready to go to the body shop.

Just a quick query hope someone has a solution…… we wanna take all the steering rack out to get at all the fiddly bits, for paint and so it can be refurbed. The car still needs to be manouverable. If we take it out can you just pull on the wheels to get it to turn or will it just be a nightmare?

You could maybe try autoglym tar and glue remover for the last of the black stuff spray it onand letave for five minutes then it should allow you to wipe of whats left.
keep up the good work 8)

UPDATE! At long last!

Due to things like it taking longer than we thought to get all the underseal off and expose all the rust, hence it taking longer to get to the bodyshop! And the slight hinderence of me breaking my foot whilst washing the car! In a cast, off work and all that. Duh. But i did say i was in no desperate hurry to get it back as there was alot of work to get done! Well, most of it bar the engine and interior (they're next on the agenda!) have been taken care of, either cleaned and re-painted or replaced for new. Here's a list of some of the things we've been doing:
. Sandblasting, sanding, cleaning and painting all major components such as the brake assembly, wiper motor and assembly, all engine mounts, wishbones (new), gearbox protector plate, airbox, cambelt cover, the water pump, inlet manifold, carburettor (seal kit coming tomorrow hopefully!), basically anything that came out was cleaned and painted! Lots of sore cold finger tips!
. Bought quite a few bits too. Got a full polybush kit, all panels for bodywork, a new steering rack, 1 exchange drive shaft and one re-furb as the c.v joints were goosed! New disc backing plates, new end caps for me bumpers, the chrome is still mint after 31 years! Some nearly new brake callipers from me mate (rustys_mk1), these are to accomodate my wheels that i have been toying with putting on! and also a roof rack from the same place! If you need anything driver-esk then pretty much everything is for sale, drop him a line! This isn't a bad thing, all i'll say is that plans are afoot for the gold one! Anyways, the gearbox is going to get the diff bearings replaced, i have also ordered some goodridge hoses for a bit more bite. Will be getting new brakes all round, i have also a full set of wheel bearings to go in.
Next on the list is to re-build the engine, we're gonna do most of it but gonna get it measured at an engine shop (good local guys), then buy internals, fit them, give it a lick of paint and hey presto! Well, a bit longer than that, but we'll keep you's updated! Also found a place that should be able to trim the seats, provided he can get the material. Meanwhile, heres some pics, just off me phone, not many, just the water pump and the carb, just to get an idea! haven't been able to get to the garage with a camera with the gammy foot!
Hoping to get down the morra to pull the engine to bits, fingers crossed!
Till next time!
Just started cleaning:

To polish or not to polish??

After a couple of hours pulling it to bits and scrubbing with o toothbrush and carb cleaner:

Close up of how the water pump did look!

After a good scrub and some galvanising paint:

bodywork
Well, managed to get down to see the car today, took a few snaps of the work that has been done to it since i dropped it off. These hasn't been a great deal done for the time it has been there but to be fair to tommy, it was right at christmas time when we dropped it off and he has other priority work which i fully understand.
I'm pleased to see what has been carried out, and to a really good standard too. Here, have a looksies!!
Here's the man with the angle grinder and welder! Caught in the act! LOL

Some of the rot that fell out of the car, and the cut away sill!

The rear arch nearly fully repaired

The new sill tacked in place

Front corner repair, below door front, whole corner was missing lol!

And thought this was a pretty cool pic inside the garage! Two Splittys!

Next day set aside is sunday to get the engine apart, will hopefully update soon again!
Till next time friends!
