Good News and Bad News

Hi all

It's been ssoooo long since I have been on here and am sad to say that I have neglected my baby for the past two years.  Anyway, she is going back on the road .

We have completely stripped out her interior, and tbh, all it needed was a really good clean.  All that is done.  There is also no rust in the floor pans or anything under the arches or underneath (that we can see) so all good there.

She starts and ticks over nicely although the choke is getting stuck a bit.

Her bonnet, which was wrecked well before I had it, is going to have a respray along with with around the windscreen and the wings but don't want to pay out for that until she has passed her MOT.

I was trying to sell her as I wasn't able to give her any time but didn't have any offers that I was happy with so have decided until she is worth a fortune, she completely dies or if someone offers me a swap for a nice white Scirocco GT2 then she is staying .

However, we have come across a problem.  The brakes have seized.  We have changed the master cylinder and bled all the brakes but when you press on the brake pedal there is no resistance and once down the pedal does not come back up by itself.  Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this????

So are you saying the pedal goes right to the floor and stays there,it should return on its own even without fluid in it,possible servo issue but easy to guess without seeing it

There's a strong return spring behind the servo, which should push the pedal back. Sounds like its missing or not fitted properly etc.

We have got a bit further today.  Put new bleed nipples on as it looks like the old ones were totally blocked.  Have bled the brakes again and there is now resistance.  The brake pedal doesn't go right down to the floor anymore.  However, the pedal is still not returning.  Is the spring you are talking about the one you can see at the back top of the engine bay?  If so, that is there and the brake pedal worked ok before the car was parked up so presume the spring was fitted correctly then.  Do you think it's worth replacing that and seeing if it could be an issue?

We have now come across another problem.  The rear passenger brake drum is not holding on.  When the brake is pressed you are still able to turn it.  We have taken the drum apart and it seemed to be working correctly but when we put it back together again it went back to how it was.  Any ideas what could be causing this?

It sounds like the master cylinder is jamming, I wonder if you can unbolt it and see if the pedal travels back and forth freely when the servo and master cylinder are disconnected?

What were the bleed nipples completely blocked with?>

Tbh, I'm not sure as my dad took them off……..I was there purely in a supervisory role lol.  He said one of them had rust but not sure about the other.

I am wondering if it could be something to do with the servo as we have just replaced the master cylinder with a brand new one.  The reason we changed it was because the brake was going down to the floor.  

OK compare new and old MC. Check the rod is exactly the same length/distance from its mounting face.
