Coilovers

Post

Afternoon guys and gals, finally getting round to thinking about ride height on the GTi, I've read on a few forums (including here) that the JOM coilovers are way too hard and I should be spending a bit hard earned to get AP or something along that line.
I don't want to spend loads, it's not a daily driver but don't want to waste money either.

Any advice or experience would be cool

Thanks
JW

kw are a very very good brand they have made a nice set of oem+ coilovers for a road going gti will give you a nice ride also if you get some raised suspension mounts you wont have a hard lumpy ride and you could slam it to the ground and still have a nice ride hope this helps good luck

I'm just going through this exercise myself so I can offer my opinion.
I have H&R Cup suspension now and it's great, but to make the car look how I want it to, I need some adjustment.
So in a nutshell, I'm not looking for serious track performance, but I don't want to make the handling worse than with the H&R's either. My car is a stock 1800 GTI.

There are lots of people with KWs, Koni's etc, who speak very highly of them, and no doubt they're excellent - but they're also expensive!
There are lots of people with JOMs, TAs etc, who swear by them and say they're fine, and no doubt they'll do the job.

But I'm not about putting the cheapest gear I can find on my Golf, I'm also not in a position to put the best of everything on it either.

So,  the conclusion I've reached for my own situation after weighing it all up all the opinions and options:

I'm going with the AP's.
- Basically they are the Skoda to KW's Audi.
- Made in the same place as KW, with a similar design, but using cheaper parts.
- Price wise, they're at the upper end of the cheap range.

I don't know if that is helpful, but there it is. ;)

I've used APs numerous times and value for money they are the best. EBay cheapies will last a year before they are ruined. APs are double the cost but will probably last 5 times longer if not more.

I'm just in the process of fitting some coilovers but the cheep variety from ebay. I'm looking at selling the car in a few months so didn't want to spend a lot for some else to enjoy.

Ive never had coil overs so could some advise on how to set up. They have two sets of springs on each strut. A thick round one on the top and a thin falt one on the bottom. There's an adjustment screw between the two and one at the bottom.  Could some explain what each spring does and what affect moving the middle adjustment screw has. I assume the bottom screw adjust the rid height?

thanks?

Why are you fitting them if you are selling the car? I would keep with the springs and shocks as cheap coilovers are terrible, I would pay less for a car with cheap coilovers as I would want to change back to springs and shocks unless you are keeping the old struts etc and selling them with the car?
