1.1 GG hunting at idle and missing at speed

this little 1.1 Formel E Golf is one I bought as a non-runner. It hadn't been on the road in 20 years so I recommissioned it. In doing so it got: new timing belt & water pump, new fuel pump, new points, condensor, rotor, cap, HT leads, spark plugs, coil. I took the carb off and cleaned and blew it through wherever I could. I also replaced the top gasket, checked the float, float needle etc. All fine. Gave it a good (tested) vac-advance unit, the original was dead.

So after a lot of new parts thrown at it, I now have it finally running and driving. I set the points gap using a feeler gauge, I don't have a dwell meter, got it up to temperature, set the idle speed with a tachometer, adjusted the ignition timing with a strobe light. It's running fairly well but the problem is it hunts a little at idle. Just a little and nothing that I would be too bothered about if it wasn't for the excessive smoke it's throwing out, even when up to temp and with the choke fully off. Also, when out for a spin on the local lanes, it's hesitating and missing through all gears.

I double, triple checked the HT leads are on in the correct order and since everything in the ignition system is new and adjusted up, I'm hoping that's all squared away. So what am I down to: air leaks? I ran the engine at idle and sprayed Lynx around the vacuum hose to the brake servo, the servo itself, the vac lines to the advance unit, the valve in the airbox, the warm/cold air flap at the air intake nozzle, the hose that goes to the fuel economy gauge in the dash. Maybe the rubber carb mount/gasket fella is perished but the lynx isn't being drawn in there when sprayed, there's no change in idle speed when sprayed. Maybe something more volatile might be better for diagnosing vacuum leaks.

Are the hunting idle, excessive smoke at idle and miss at speed connected? I have to get this car NCT'd (Irish MOT) as soon as it's ready but I know it won't pass as it is.
