AT LAST! Hairys Resto!!

Had a bash again at the rear beam nuts tonight. Made some (slow!) progress in the little time I had.




I've got one nut loose now (Yippee! :cheer: ) but the others are so rusty and rounding off will need to look at nut splitter. Went to Halfrauds to buy one - they only had one left and it was already broken! :evil:  Also went to buy an M10 die nut from a local tool supplier. They wanted ?36 + VAT! 8O  Fortunately, borrowed one off a mate. It's helped to tidy the threads up a bit, will use it when the nuts are off.

Thought about using heat but just a tad dubious about using the blow torch near the fuel pump! Oh well, getting there - will spend Saturday on it and hopefully get the rear end stripped ready for cutting and welding!! :twisted:

I remember that feeling of triumph when the first one came undone . I had two rounded off. I found a slighty too small socket and spent a bit of time hammering it all the way on to the nut nice and square, did the trick. One of the biggest problems I found was that all this has to be done upside down lying on your back.

There's someone (can't remember his name) on here who simply put an air powered impact driver onto the nuts, pulled the trigger and hoped for the best! And it worked!

Well by coincidence Mark, I tried your method too this am. Had already used nut splitter on one nut, another was already loose and then the last two I just hammered on a 16mm socket on and hey-presto, they all came off no bother!!

Chassis legs not too bad - drivers side is the worse

You can see the gaping hole at the end of the sill! The other side doesn't seem so bad.

Thought I'd be welding today but took longer to strip all than I thought. Forgot I had braided hoses on the back so no flexies to simply cut - I wanted to keep these as in good nick, so spent a fair bit of time stripping everything off, then got rear beam off.

It wasn't until I dropped the beam on the deck I realised my axle stands were in the way of just sliding the whole assembly out from under the car ops:  I took one spring off (wish I had loosened the nuts before removing the beam ) and then managed to slide out.

Filler neck came off without need to unscrew - as you can see, a tad rotten!


Hopefully will get some more time on it tomorrow - will finish stripping interior, take out rear side glass then remove the 'over sill' and see the original lurking under and what rot is really there?! 8O

Anyway, that's it for now - just a couple more pics of my lightened rear end! :wink:

Well, I only had a small amount of time today so still no welding (Need to get the MIG dirty, its looking too clean! )

I finished stripping the interior out completely (spare bedroom is full with seats, dash…..) and made a start on removing the 'over-sill' on the drivers side. Those who know my car will remember this unpainted panel :wink:

Unfortunately, the only thing the previous owner did well was mask the spot welds so its a bit messy now having missed with the spot weld drill bit a few times ops:  Anyway, it'll be tidy when it's done.

The sill isn't even welded at the front - held on with silicon sealer!! 8O

Doubt I'll get to finish cutting this off until the weekend now (can't be making too much noise late at night and annoy the neighbours :roll:  ) Just need to be careful cutting the sill off as they used the whole panel, slapped over the old. I can't cut away too much of the original or my new one wont fit!

Finally, took arch cover off 8O  Rear off side corner is WELL rotted out! There was even a 2p piece in there - taking it out has halved the value of my car

Need to find some quieter jobs to do on the car at night time now…

You've got a bit of a job on there mate, but in the end you will know its worth it.

Can't believe someone welded that sill panel on like that - great big water trap 8O . Is there one on the other side?

Mark - sill on the other side is original. May need a little 'fettling' but no where near as bad as drivers side

Got most of the original sill cut off now - not much time on it today :cry:

Inner sill looks alright so far (No pics yet!) Just wanted advise if it's worth laying on some hammerite or similar or just leave it and plenty of waxoyl when all is finished??

Nice work Andy, good luck with the resto.  

I'm going to start work on my inner arches soon.  Cleaning and re-coating a bit.  Sorry if this is a stoopid question, when you say 'Hammerite' the sills, what is the hammerite product.  Primer?  I think I should use some for the flakey paint bits.

kinda the same state as my y plate was, but i never had a cover sill to deal with, keep up the good work you know it will be worth it when its done, my campaigns reg number is sys aswell , do you know what area the number is from?cheers

whatever you do, DO NOT use halfords antirust primer, it doesn't work at all

Personally, I'd go for a weld-through primer and red oxide primer anything that won't be welded, then hammerite + wax oil should keep the nasty stuff from coming back
