"Atom" my first Cabrio

Post

Today I slapped a deposit down to hold my new daily until I can collect it a week on Tuesday.  Until very recently I've been tooling around in a 1.9 diesel BX estate which was a superb machine but terminally rotten, sadly.  My Austin Princess has taken up daily duties with considerable aplomb in the meantime and while I'd love to have her as my only car it's not always practical, particularly since getting regular insurance on her is proving tricky, getting a second car for regular daily duties is more sensible.  To this end I nearly bought a rotten Rover 213 and came close to running a tatty Mk3 Fiesta but then this Mk1 Golf Cabrio popped up locally for a price that could not be refused, even with the lack of T&T.

I was after a car with a 1.3 engine in hatch or estate from somewhere between 1980 and 2000.  I'm just as suprised as anyone that I bought this car which is only one of those things being a 1984 Golf Cabrio 1.6 GL.  I don't even like soft tops that much, so goodness knows why I want this one!  Presently the car is mostly resprayed in quite a nice metallic blue that needs attention on some of the edges and is wearing wheels which I'd be happier to be without.  The interior is apparently a very desirable set in black with a faint blue diagonal panel to the door cards and seats.  I don't really like the interior, I prefer the standard grey tweed so to keep the price down and keep me happy I'm doing a swap with one of the vendor's other cars so he keeps the interior he wants and I get what I want.  Headlight washers and automatic choke are a novelty to me, I've never had these things on a car before.

I suspect, from the thing hanging from the rear view mirror, that this car has been on this forum before.  If anyone knows "Atom" as it's been nicknamed by the previous owner and my brother, (it's the reg plate, you see) I'd be interested to hear from you.

Car needs tyres, new front discs and valve stem seals (probably) and will eventually want a replacement hood outer.  Other than that I can't really find anything wrong or missing, it's all typical mid-80s VW quality which I know and love.  I'll add a picture when I'm able to, but I'm looking forward to getting stuck back into 80s VW ownership again.
