2e engine conversion

Right then chaps and chappesses,
ive bitten the bullet and gone a got my self a 2l, 2e bottom end, which im gunna couple up with a rebuilt and modified DX 1.8 gti head, which will also have a newman, road rally cam 280deg duration.
anyhoooo, what exactly will i need to alter in the swap, i know ive got to retain and use my gtis oil pump and bottom pulley.
what else do i need to do?
im in the dark when it come to what needs altering on the dizzy aswell.
which head gasket should i use?
plus theres a blanking plate i need from (perhaps) tsr but at ?150+ seems rediculously expensive!
oh yeh, which cam belt should i use, being a taller block n all that!

any ideas or thoughts then that would be sweet

I know there are other threads on this but cant seem to find the relevant info.

Hi mate I'm doing a short block conversion on mine here is the link.

kins conversion

For the tall block there are issues with exhaust manifold catching on the bulkhead or steering rack (if your'e running a 4-branch/tubular type). You need a exhaust manifold spacer. (available from TSR)

The oil filter housing has different bolt holes so you need the correct housing.

The breather hole at the front of the block can be blocked of with a blanking plate. If you're planning on using and audi 5 cylinder WUR you can make a bracket to bolt it to the block and block the breather

You need a spacer ring to fit your distributor (again avilable from TSR)   The final drive cog needs swapping for the 2.0 one too.

The golf sump needs to be fitted.

You can use 1800 or 2000 head bolts. They are stretch bolts so need to be new.

Fit a multi-layer, metal, head gasket from a 2 litre as they are more reliable than the composite type.

I thinks thats about everything…….

Hope this helps and if you need any help get in touch.

Cheers Karl :D

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D

cheers for the reply kins.
right, not wanting to be the forum dunce, but what exactly is a 5 cylinder audi WUR???? :?
im going to be using the standard manifolds etc, do you think there will be any fouling as i am unsure whether you mean that you get fouling if you use a 4 brancher or not?
ive requested a broucher from tsr, is everything in there?

has anyone here done the 2e swap? if so anything i should know before i dive in!!!

Heres a thread with an explanation on the WUR.

AUDI WUR

I'm not sure if the standard cast manifold will catch on the bulk head :dontknow: . I doubt it would impinge on the rack. It's just that most people who do the conversion add a performance manifold as it gives a big gain that's why I mentioned it as a problem for a tall black.

oh right cool,
 thanks for the speedy reply.
dont think i can afford the extra expense of a performance manifold???

if anyone has a piccy of a fitted WUR from a 5 cylinder audi then that would be cool so i could visulise it.

I looked into that conversion for a car running digifant injection (MK2) but i'm not sure of parts you need for a k-jet. Sounds like Kins knows his stuff and it may also be worth having a look on the Club GTI forums as a few people on there have done that conversion I think. If you decide a short block conversion is easier I know someone who may take the 2E off your hands

I be like nato i'll turn up to both just to keep everyone happy . Not wearing a beret though so don't ask .

Jon that kit from tsr was ?60 inc vat and is listed on my reciept as-
1.8-2.0 distributer ring               ez/2.0con1
1.8-2.0 breather bung round       ez/2.0con2
1.8-2.0 breather plate                ez/2.0con3

Those are the tsr part numbers

hope that helps

I was going to have a local machine shop make up some copies for me because i though that ?60 was a bit on the steep side but i run out of time .

Kins i will check the posts for the northwest meet too.
