What made you Buy a MK1?

I bought mine so i could go camping with all my new friends…..

For the love of ol Skool cars I was after a tintop then my mate says have you seen the cabby so he shown me one then I was double hooked lol but still want a tintop one day

Got my 1st mk1 golf in 2004. Fell in love with the shape when my bro had one in 1999

I got one so JB would talk to me!

I don't even like them!

It's got style good looking and trim like it's owner …..
And I can repair it my self to save on garage bills ;-)

Got one so that I can get out away from the wife and kids whenever I want !!

I sold my Saxo and was looking for an old VW, was really looking for a MK2 GTI. My old cabby came up for sale 10 mins from my GF's place and with summer around the corner i ended up buying that as it was the same year as alot of the MK2's I was looking at. I had no idea about MK1's how popular they are and i had no intention to get into this "show scene" - it was just a summer toy.
I ended up selling it and buying my Series 1 this year

Used to sell them nearly 30 years ago.
I loved them then and they looked good.
But they look even better now!  

Grew up wanting a MK1. A chap two doors down from our house when I was a kid, bought a new one every 1st August when the new reg number came out.

Also, a Mars red GTI was around the corner - that's what I really wanted!!

I had a black 1.5 MK1 when I was 19 and then 10 years ago bought my Mars Red GTI. Shame it's been in bits for the last 5 years but I hope to rectify that in time for the 10th Anniversary AGM

I was fed up of welding up beetles

i brought one as a daily years ago instead of something air cooled, and i had always liked them, and have had one ever since

  same here, got first one in 1990….had many since then…

It was sat on the (ex) in-laws driveway for months and I thought that it 'just need a T-Cutting'. WRONG!!!

The reason that I bought one, was because I really wanted a MK1 to restore for our next project (me and my father) after He had gotten a VW Beetle successfully restored and somehow the MK1 appealed to me over the MK2 as there wasn't many about.

I got one because a mk1 is the only car you dream of as a child that isn't a Lamborghini or other unaffordable Italian boyhood heroes
