MK1 Golf Community Sprint deterring youth offending - ENDED! :(

Post

Right people, some of you may know that recently I got myself a 5 door mk1 shell. I have accessed the shell and it's not bad but a little too much work for me, having the swallowtail arrive soon.
So, I was discussing the car at work and my colleague said, "why scrap the shell, get some of the local kids of area to help and teach them about cars/mechanics"….hmmm.

So I have managed to speak to a few undesirables that were hanging on the street one night and they have showed an interest.

I'm not a registered charity or company, but as I work with children/teenagers for a living, I am CRB checked; I will write some sort of waver, that I'm not responsible for accidents and will also get permission from their parents.

Now, back to the mk1 shell….it has been stripped, however has a set of coil overs on it, raised front turrets, removed scuttle panel, battery tray and small block engine mount.  Some sort of conversion to the tank to run fuel injection,  two rear doors, tailgate, press metal plates and few other bits.

Although there is no funding for this project, I will pay for all the costs out of my own pocket, including materials, garage running costs and equipment.
I will also use some of my private collection of parts:
1.   wings,
2.   Bonnet,
3.   Rear lights,
4.   Custom bucket FTO seats,
5.   Interior trim
6.   Clocks
7.   Rear GTI Beam (complete) Possible disc conversion,
8.   Calipers, hoses, brake pads
9.   Roof lining,
10.   Alloy wheels & tyres etc. etc…

Right now, if I can ask for a little help with this project. For the project to go to forward, I would need to locate the following items that I do not have, hopefully as a donation or as cheap as possible, as it will be coming out of my pocket.

1.   GTI engine and gearbox with all ancillaries, Inc. fuelling side. (prefer previously running and not in bits) - Self sourced and paid for
2.    oil cooler
3.   GTI complete wiring loom with fuse board (uncut would be good) - self sourced and paid for
4.   GTI drive shafts - self source and paid for
5.   GTI steering rack (I think I have one of these, will have to check) - Found one in my parts
6.   GTI Radiator and fan (I think I have a fan)
7.   Two front doors or caddy doors complete - Brad MK1 (paid for)
8.   Dashboard with glove box
- self sourced and paid for
9.   Heater box with cables and adjuster - Brad mk1
10.   Steering wheel
11.    Headlights - smudger  These are just the main pieces to the puzzle, any other bits are welcome.

I am willing to travel to collect parts, but the closer  to Birmingham the better, I am normally at most shows so can collect from there and if failing all this, happy to pay postage.

FAQ:
Q1. Whos car is it?
A1. Technically its mine, as i will be the registered owner/keeper

Q2. Is this child / free labour?
A2. No, not at all. As everything will be explained to the youth(s) parents and as well as a contact of some sort, ….to be fair, im happy to cut the shell up and move on…..just trying to make a difference to someone life. Plus the youths that help will be taught skills for life, like welding, prep work, fitting brakes, bleeding them etc…nothing difficult.

Q3. What will happen to the car once its finished?
A3. Hoping for a Magazine feature (in talks already), go to a few shows, then sold. "Profit will be split including a donation to a charity"

Q4. What happens if the youths decide they don't want to continue with the project or fall out mid way?
A4. I will do my best to return any parts to their rightful owners and then probably offer the shell on here or cut it up.

Q5. Completion time?
A5. Going to be aiming at "sooner the better" (approx 4/5 months)

Any other questions please do not hesitate to ask me. I thank you for reading and keep your negative comments to yourself, i'm trying to do something positive.

Cheers
Bob

Good on ya Bobby - nice one

I could probably help with some bits but maybe not as soon as you need, but most of my car is being replaced with new. Radiator is one on the list I can do, although not until I can get access to take out so that will be a while, I'll keep you posted as and when I've got a collection of parts that I think you may be interested in
