Checklist for car that has been sat for years...

Post

Hi, My GTi has been sat around for god knows how many years, I want to hear it tick over before I decide to sell or keep it. I think hearing her run would be the deciding factor.

So, before turning the key, I know there will be a few things to do first, but I want to make sure I don't miss anything.

I guess the fuel has 'gone off' by now, so I'll need to drain the tank. (Tank out, empty, back in?)
New oil and oil filter
The fuel pump still primes, so I presume that's ok?
The battery still charges, I doubt it will hold charge for long but it should be enough to start it for now.
I don't plan to drive it yet so I won't need to bother with transmission fluid yet will I?

Can't think of anything else at the minute, but please let me know if I've left anything out!

Change the fuel filter plus the  fuel injection metering head could be gummed up with old fuel, some carburettor cleaner may help free things up if you carefully dismantle and have a good spray around.

Spark Plugs are cheap enough so change those.

The Cam belt may be an unknown entity, I would be checking it first for signs of deterioration, my car had sat for 14 yrs and it looked okay,so I got the car started initially but then changed it before driving anywhere.
