Yep I understand that, but I still don't really understand how having this seal working as intended helped with the cold start issue. You'd think the tank wouldn't need a pressurised seal as there would still be air getting into the tank anyway to displace the fuel as it's being used up. I would've thought this sender unit seal would be to simply prevent fuel leaks and dust getting in.
EDIT: having had a chat with some people I believe maybe the problem is that whilst the car is off and the tank is less-pressurised the fuel in the lines flows back down into the tank leaving air pockets. When you're cold starting, the air pockets are pushed out through the engine causing it to stutter.
