Project "little monster"

Okay, I guess this falls squarely into the "modifications" forum, and I guess its also what the purists are most scared of people doing…..

The new arrival. Full MoT too….

It won't be seeing the roads for a little while yet though.

Hello? What's this? Hmmmm, it has those funny oval headlamps, that means it must be a Mk3. An uprated 2 litre? ABF engine perhaps (2litre tall block 16V)? Didn't they do a more powerful one with….

WARNING - PURISTS LOOK AWAY*
(*in fact, you may as well forget this entire thread)

Count them induction tubes….1 2 3 4 …… 5 ……. 6!!! Cylinders! Yes, this is a common-or-garden, just had a slight accident resulting in a Cat C write-off, VR6!!!!

Here's another pic, showing the main area of damage. The airbox and rad are trashed, but the chassis legs, engine and alternator all made it unscathed. Phew!

Watch this space……

Blimey Paul - going for it big time now !  If you haven't already done so, registering on Caddy forum may be of interest as there are a couple of VR6 Mk1 Caddys on there. 'Admin' has posted a lot of build pics. He's managed to keep a lot of stuff like ABS, etc, too I seem to remember.

Unless that would spoil your fun of course :)

Mini update. A couple of hours put in tonight, just taking my time slowly stripping the bits away and off the Mk3, so I can properly gain access to the engine to remove it. There's no Haynes manual for VR6s, so I need to take things easy and label a lot of the connections, etc and also the digital camera is really handy to give a reference later on.

Here's the latest pic.

Cheers for the link Ben, I'd found that a while ago and it means I can simply go ahead with the Megasquirt in there!

Tonight's update: I've finished the disconnections at the top of the engine, there were a couple of things I was stuck on (not having a manual for the VR6) but a night's sleep and thinking it logically, solved them.

Undoing CV joints, a bit of a pain/time consuming

Taking the strain

With the weight of the engine off it, the front crossmember can be unbolted and move out the way.

Then the engine can be lowered and slid forwards a little

Bit further

Clear of the car now

Better out than in

Tomorrow and onwards I'll be stripping what I need of the fuel system, the lambda probe, and a lot of the electrics (including the dashboard) and measuring and cutting the main subframe for the rear engine/transmission mounts.

You are a brave man Paul . I remember GOLF+ mag saying that they could count on one hand how many UK VR6 MK1's had been built . Lets hope you prove them wrong and need from now on need 2 hands !

It feels like I've not gotten much done recently - partly due to the electrics being a slow task, and partly because of the lack of time spent on it, due to the poor weather. Anyway, I've removed a lot of the dashboard, interior (to gain access to all the wiring) and removed/disconnected/pulled through, a lot of the wiring.

With a lack of space in the shed (long story), I've had to put this sheet over the engine/transmission and hope it doesn't leak or get blown away.
