Mk1 GL 5 Door

Evening all,

thought I share the resurrection of my Mk1. Registered over here in '82, it lived abroad for the 3 years previous, it's got 48k on the clock and has lived a sheltered existence for quite a while !

I've had the car 9 years now, in which time it's had a bit of resto, was on the road for 6 months and has since spent the last 5 years mothballed in my dad's garage   . A combination of university, moving south and an unhealthy obsessions with Mk2's mean it's spent quite a while sitting gathering dust.

A few pics of when it was rebuilt about 6 years ago

Then over the last two years i've been rebuilding this from scratch (and it's still not finished ………)

So back to the Mk1. Whilst trying to get it running a few months back the mechanical fuel pump decided to leak causing blind panic, a fire extinguisher and quite a charred set of ht leads.

Due to wanting to do quite a few jobs to it before getting it back on the road, i've decided to de-clutter the engine bay (nothing fancy just remove the battery tray etc.), replace my twin carbs with some bike ones, freshen up the paint a bit and powdercoat everything in sight (i'm a bit of a clean freak !)

Welder borrowed

Mid Welding

Mid Smoothing

New Wing

Next on the list is to drop the engine / gearbox out, finish the prep work and paint the bay, build a manifold for the carbs and drop most of the running gear off to be powdercoated.

Hopefully i'll be able to keep this thread up to date !
Cheers,
J
