Florida blue '79 moredoor

Hi All, After a decade and a half of aircooled v-dub ownership I have just traded my '64 restocal bug for my first watercooled :D

It's a series 1 '79 (same age as me ie old! :mrgreen: ) 1.1L and is pretty much stock other than some coilovers to bring it down to the height god intended and the early banded steels. It's in pretty good shape and only has 52k on the clock with some paperwork to back this up - result!

Here's how it looked when I picked it up…..


Personally I think the banded steels made it really hard work to drive (standard 4 speed) and the poor little mouse motor was revving it's ass of just to try and not be a rolling road block :lol: and didn't fill the arches enough, these will be up for sale shortly if anyone's interested :wink: .

I managed to aquire two sets of Porsche cookie cutters, 1 set of 6" and one set of 7's, not a favorite wheel of mine or anyone elses i'm guessing, but kept in the aircooled theme/feel which I was after, they are also the same offset etc as the equivalent Fuchs which I was hoping to fit when I could 1. afford £1000+ and 2. find some original late 6's and 7's.

The cookies were pretty rough so I set about having the rims polished and centres painted, realising how much centre caps can be in polished painted crest form I wanted,  I purchased some rough ones from ebay and did a little resto on them….

With the aid of a Frost's polishing kit and some tamiya paint they went from this

I got my rims back from being painted yesterday so got some rubber mounted on them this morning, went for the old faithful Bridgestone Potenza 165 50 15's all round, this gives a bit of stretch on the back and looks stockish on the front (staggered 6's and 7"s).

Bolted up the 4x100 > 5 x 130 15mm wide adaptors and mounted the rims this afternoon…..



Pretty pleased with the outcome TBH, to the die hard stretched rubber fan the tyres probably look too narrow but i'm happy :wink:  Also just got out from a quick blast and the extra circumference has given me enough top end to keep up with most pensioners and learner drivers :mrgreen:

Might look into getting the arches rolled so it can come down a bit more (my bug used to eat cat's eyes :) ) but the drive shafts are pretty snug as it is, and the o/s fat one has been rubbing!

That's it for now but have loads of plans as and when funds permit, there's a complete G60 engine, 'box and front brakes off of a 'rado up the workshop just sitting there hmmmmmmmmm………….

Still dont understand the whole Porsche logos on a VW thang - guess I'm showing my age!  :lol:  8) but I do think your Mk1 looks perfect,  I love it!

Like the wheels, like the cookie cutters on my 944

I guess it's a spin off from years of aircooled modding, porsche wheels just go hand in hand I suppose, I did think about fitting some blank centre caps but IMO the detailing just sets them off a treat.

The 944 looks very tidy, I did think about getting one instead of the mk1 as they appear to be great value motoring, what's it like to live with? Just worried me that parts and servicing are priced for people that can afford Porsche's in general - which I can't :cry: :lol:

As for the 5dr, I hated them at first but this one came up and I have grown to love them, dare I say even perfer them :redfaced: 8O It was seeing Mk1 Mather's 5dr Florida blue project on the 'other' forum which convinced me to go for it, an awesome inspirational thread that, makes mine look rough as nuts!

Get the detailing thing, the job you did on the centre caps does look spot on.

944's are cheap to buy for what they are, depending which one you get and what you can do yourself, don't have to be expensive to keep on the road. I was surprised how much Porsche support old cars with spare parts and some aren't pricey. An early one like mine can be cheap to run, £150 for classic insurance so its not all bad.

The drive reminds me of my MK1, no power steering, similar performance. The later 944's are more like modern cars though.

My Mk1's been off the road 4 years now, need to pull my finger out and finish it, I do miss driving it

I would love a set of Cookie Cutters! Can you tell me what offset the 7j's are? I would want to fit 7j all round :)

I have some camber shims but haven't fitted them yet, is does occasionally rub especially with more than me onboard. Going to fit the shims and see it that sorts it.

Ideally though i'd like to go down at least another inch, this will require a chassis notch so i'll probably bite the bullet and go for some arch rolling too  :mrgreen:

I would have though with the Camber Shims you should be able to get a lot lower :) That is the plus of fitting lower ET wheels, you get more inner arch clearance. Its looking awesome at the moment, can't wait to see it when its lower as well :) I have had a quick re read to see if you had already said in your thread somewhere but I couldn't see, what size tires are you running?
