I've got a '79 Golf L 1.1 which has been cutting out when braking and spluttering when driving. I'm assuming it's the fuel pump on the block that's faulty but struggling to find a replacement.
The current pump has the lever fed diaphragm as a pose to the spring activated version but I can't seem to find a lever fed version to replace it with. The engine code starts GG so not sure if the current pump is the correct one anyway? Can anyone advise or give me a link for what I need to get?
The lever petrol pump is for big-block (1.5-1.8 carb) engines, the spring/piston one is for small-block (0.9-1.3) engines. Not sure they are interchangable?
To test the pump remove the outlet hose and hold a rag over the pump, when cranking you should get a good healthy spurt of petrol….

Yeh thats what throwing me out tbh, cant see how the lever version has been installed and has been working if thats the case!

Where are you in the world? some non UK MK1 had larger capacity small blocks and lower capacity big block engines

In the UK, although the car was recently imported from Ireland
I took the pick up pump from the tank to check earlier and all seemed ok. There was a very small amount of rust sat in the tank that I removed.
I also checked the fuel pump and the flow started slow at first but then picked up to a regular flow. After running the engine for 5 mins I shut it off and could hear the ticking in the above video coming from the fuel pump. Has anyone come across this before?
Do you have a pump in the tank or do you mean the pickup pipe thats part of the level sender screwed in on top of the tank?
If you have a seperate pump its been frigged about with. Rust and debris in the tank won't help, there should be a gauze at the bottom of the pickup pipe.
Rotten petrol filler pipes cause untold numbers of MK1 not running correctly by allowing water, rust and road debris into the fuel and blocking and ruining everything from the tank to the engine
