Front downpipe bracket/heat-shield

Post

Looking at the photos below - is this the correct method of supporting the front downpipe from the engine block????  I can't see anything resembling this bracket arrangement on the parts list??

Secondly, should there be any heat-shields on the downpipe as shown in the parts list image below.  I wonder if anyone has a photo of what their downpipe / bracket / heat shield looks like??

I have a similar exhaust to yours, never seen the exhaust attached to the Engine block on any Mk1.

Obviously you need to protect the steering gaiter, mine originally did not have a heatshield, probably fell off,  the gaiter got very hard. I replaced it during the refurb.

He is a picture of how my one was attached.

Malcolm - you will see the comments by Briano on my other wrongly published thread about the same topic.

Did your downpipe have the two large clips and rounds flexi joint on the manifold joint - or the 6 bolt join?

I have the floating circular connection with two large clips. I was fortunate to buy the Heatshield from eBay many moons ago.

I don't have any brackets on my down pipe either but I believe my heat shield to be the original (mainly because my car seems very original). It has the 6 bolt manifold and I had a new down pipe last year. The guy that fitted it commented on the fact that the heat shield was still there and in good condition.
Here's a couple of pics. I'll get some from underneath when I get a chance (if you need them).

My '82 1.8 GTI has the same shield as Saulty and the top pic on the other thread.

I got it from VW @17 years ago when I restored the car. The original was missing and had fried the steering col/rack boot.

My '87 1.8 carb Cabrio has the toilet bowl down pipe and the shield in the 3rd pic on the other thread

The support bracket looks home made, I've never seen one on a big block engined car but the small block 1.1 and 1.3 have the down pipe clamped to the front of the block (engine is x-flow so exhaust is at front and runs under engine)

I have item 32 I needed a pair myself as the studs had sheared on mine and got a few made up to make it worth while - £30 per pair posted.

Well after much bashing of hands and scraping of arms I have finally managed to take the down pipe off the car today.  Here are some pics of the "interesting" bracket arrangement that was supporting the bottom the pipe.  It is actually quite sturdy but from what you have all said there shouldn't be any lower support.  And of course no evidence at all of the heat shields!!!!  I am on the hunt for them now.

Do you still have all 6 studs intact on the fanimold? When I got my GTI one was already AWOL and I finished another off...
