Exhaust banging

is a mk1 supposed to have a flexi pipe? Reason im asking is my exhaust which is an ashley 4 branch and supersprint middle and back is rattling of the car, ive tried it sitting different ways but it either rattles from the bend that goes over the beam or from the front hook point when the 2 hooks hit each other. This only happens at low revs but its embarising, expecially in reverse up a hill. Ive had the car and exhaust for so long i cant remember if there was a flexi in the original. 
I think its the way forward but just making sure, in my head it must need 1 because the engine jolts forward or back, surly if it didnt flex it would brake due to the constant up and down movement caused by the engine, Engine mounts r all gd, so are the rubbers and mounts. Cheers mick.
