So anyway one of the auto guys said I could send them off to have the entire electrical elements on the back of the clocks re done to make it all work again but its quite expensive, he didnt really know a rough cost. Has anyone ever had this done before or know someone thats VERY good with these clocks and can work they're magic?
Hope to hear from someone soon, any sort of information will help
Cheers

Never had it done.
Who are you thinking of sending them off to ?
Probably cheaper to source a good second hand set.

I couldn't tell you as he didn't say, he only brought it up in conversation last time we spoke and didn't question him on it. I'm trying to get hold of him at the moment but hes proving hard to get hold of
Finding it a struggle getting a good second hand set, I would be after the clocks with the MPG and gear shift indicator too as that is what mine has at the moment

If both don't work then it is usually the Cable.
Some
cabriolets/verts have a 2 part cable, that is it goes from the tranny to a o2 counterbox, then out to the speedo.
You can replace both of those cables with one from a 90-93 vw, you just need to keep the box.
It isn't that hard to reset the mileage on the clock to match your on your car, I have done it a time or 3. The older ones are a tad easier to slip the pin and move the individual numbers.
The Tach is electric and usually it is because of poor connections on the cluster connector. Remove the Shroud off the connector gingerly lift the mylar off the plastic tongue, and place a single piece of electrical tape on the pin side of the plastic tongue and replace the mylar over it.
I used white tap on the plastic tongue as it shows up better int he photos.
Clean the screws on the back of the tack one at a time, and the 2 nuts at the bottom…
Add or splice a new ground wire from pin 2 of the connector (brown) to the frame behind the cluster.

Unfortunately a lot of what you just said is out of my skillset range so hopefully I can find someone who can help me.
But yes it is both the speedo and mileage that have gone, so first thing would be source a new cable right?

Pull the side vent so it points all the way up.
Since it is now has more meat showing. Pull on the inner vent part lower down to expose the 2 fingers at the top.
Push those fingers in with a flat blade screwdriver. The Vent should come out with a little wiggle and you don't break the trims around it.
Now you can wiggle your arm in the hole behind the cluster and verify that your cable is tight to the back of the speedo cluster, and re-connect it if it isn't.
Once you are sure that it is tight, then take it for a spin and see if it isn't working.
while you have the Vent out you might want to replace the foam so you don't have colder fingers in the fall/winter.

For the oil light, I would start with Getting good Grounds to your cluster, and to your engine/tranny to frame.
Verify that your Oil filter isn't Strore branded or Generic/Fram/Bosch, Mahl, Mann, GenuineVW, Mobile1, Wix are all good filters, if your Viscosity is too low as in 10W30 you may want to run 20W50.
The flickering oil light can be the sensor on the head is bad for low pressure, or that the sensor on the oil filter flange (white) low pressure high rpm is wonky.
As stated earlier the oil filter circuit for flashing that light in in the Speedometer housing behind the speedo itself, so total dissasemmbly of the unit is required.

She doesn't get driven in the winter so I don't really need to worry about the cold that much.
The oil light problem has actually been solved a while back, although from time to time it likes to randomly make a noise again, Im putting it down to the fact its just part of its character now
