Parcel shelf don't fit.

When I push the parcel shelf to one side it falls through the gap! It like the shelf is 15mm too narrow.
The shelf and side mounts are new from VW Heritage, am I missing something before I call them and moan?

I've found some info but it just says something about elastic.

Not sure about non gti but the only way mine stayed in place is because it is attached to the rear seat. All original by the way.

Assume yours is just resting and maybe the reason for falling through.

Cheers guys, I haven't fitted it to the rear seat yet so that will stop it falling through but it is still too short.

In the image you can see I've put some closed cell foam on the side units (thought it would stop it rattling) so it really shows that it is too short, I'll remove that and use some black carpet and it won't look so bad.

Are those the proper shelf brackets for the side?  Mine had holes for speaker mounts that were in a 4X6 oval pattern….

One thought additionally, is that you can place a shim between the  shelf and where it bolts to, to space it out a wee bit, but IIRC mine would occasionally  twist its knickers and fall through when the kids would play about on the shelf with the boot hatch opened and the raising straps off.

But I agree that once it is bolted to the rear seat it won't usually twist about at the rear…. then the rear hatch  closed holds it at the rear….

Back in the old 80's on long trips I had a daughter that loved laying about on the shelf cruising down the highway… Yep terrible of me wasn't it…. she was 4 or 5 ish….

I did have tinted black windows on the car so at night you couldn't see her, and even during the day… non of the other kids like the spot like she did…. Never knew why.

Not really sure what you mean about a shim?

A shim is a washer or plate of metal between where the object bolts to and moving it further out.

Here is a shot of me inserting a shim in the upper door hinge to raise the bottom of the door up a wee bit.



You could do the same with a plate between the parcel shelf and where it bolts to...

Realise this is an old thread but It may help someone. I believe VW Heritage now Heritage Parts Centre do two different size shelfs due to this reason
