Fuel sender unit alternative

Post

Does anyone know if there is an alternative fuel sender unit to replace the elusive 533919051 unit.
Mechanic fitting new tank managed to break the original on my '91 1.8 cabriolet.

This must have happened to others and was looking for a work around ;)

Don't know of any…. I know that the part is elusive, and that Breakers or Bone Yards are the source as well as forums where folks are selling ie: thesamba.com Ebay, vwvortex classifieds.

I would of thought that the Mechanic would know to insert after the tank install, and that sourcing the part would be on him..

It may be repairable, as that is steel.

one on the right is from any polo mk2f WP_20150718_019.jpg

That's the sort of thing Sporttrucker - guessing the Polo one would fit in same profiled hole in the tank as the Golf one?? - (Mines exactly like the one on the left) and wouldn't need the pump powered as the fuel pump in the golf should pull the fuel through to the front :-)

only issue with the polo one is the plug points straight up, so makes clearance under the shell for the plug quite tight. the angled plug off the polo helps but iirc its still pretty tight under there

no its the metal type I will check if I still have the one in the pic but think it was cracked like yours

Not sure if metal one would be wide enough. Mine is about 3" via at the top.
If it is and fits with a 1/4 twist I did think it may be modified to add the inlet/outlet pipes by drilling and brazing them in(if they are not already there….Don't know as quite new to mk1's)

it looks the same just the top is metal, I can check if it fits tomorrow as I have a spare fuel tank from a late cabby

Here is what mine looks like on my Cabby.

From the Pic, it looks like they didn't have the o-ring centered, and Lubed with petroleum jelly, a must as it keeps the o-ring in position, and allows it to slide and seal with the twist of the unit.

Had a good look at mine & think they tried to prise it out rather than twisting! And once the broken section started moving & letting fuel leak out it didn't help the  O ring

You one does look very similar Briano1234…wondering what the 3rd connection is for on the socket?

ah so yours is a carbed model, you can probably use any tintop carb sender 171919051N?

looking at google images they look pretty much same, only difference I can think of is the difference in tank size so the sender arm might go lower on the cab vs the tintop. might be able to swap parts between them?
