Most easy and cheap engine upgrade for golf mk1

Post

Back to the top
Hi all,

I own a mk1 GTI '83 with a DX engine.
It is slightly tuned i guess it puts out something between 120 and 130hp's.

It's fun to drive. But sometimes I'm dreaming about an engine upgrade to make it have between 150 and 200hp's.

I know there are tons of conversion possibilities and threads about them.

But i cannot seem to find a thread that resumes the basic options so i hope this would be a fun conversation.

Let me say what for me personal is important.
* Reliability
* Everything works as meant, and keeps it stock look ( dashboard etc…)
* The car stays as stock as possible

What engines are easy to get by and are easy to maintain in the car?
Money is an object… So take everything into account in this swap… Gearbox, propshafts, exhaust, radiator, …, other things that should be custom build or swapped? The least the better I think… ?

I live in Belgium, so I have reasonably strict regulation to take into account. Maybe there are Belgian friends out here that can give advice?

Sooo very curious about your feedback!!

It gets very expensive to keep the original engine and get even more bhp out of it as you will need to start major engine work, gas flow the head, bore out the cylinders, bigger pistons, balance crank etc…

Other option is a Mk3 Golf 2.0 engine block engine conversion but you will be able to see it's not a standard looking engine.
