16V converted mk1 electrical issues

Post

Hi all,
I recently purchased an 83 GTI that has been converted to 16v at some point in the past.
It looks like it was done a long time ago.
They used a G reg mk2 16v as the donor apparently so I am guessing the loom and engine came fromt that car.
I noticed a few electrical things were a miss when i got it, no fuel guage or water temprature guage, so i thought best to pull the dash and fix the issues i could under it.
So i pulled the alarm and that made things a bit better.
But now i am trying to figure out the loom under the bonnet.
So there are miles of cable there as the whole loom is in place, including the fan connector etc.
What is the best thing to do, plull the loom and take out the wires that i dont need?
Or use the mk2 wiring in place of the mk1 stuff which has been bodged?

Also what wires in the MFA clocks run the oil pressure and water level/temp lights?
Does the 89 spec mk2 loom block plug into the mk1 fuse board? And if so are the conectors the same purpose?

Thanks

Good info in that link on fuseboxes / wiring, the later ce2 fusebox is a much better bet than the old round pin plugs on the ce1, a lot of the wiring colours are the same for both but the guide will show any differences, suggest ditching what you don't need to tidy it up,  👍
