1.8t Swirl Pot / Fuel pump issues

Post

I've converted a 1.3 driver to a 1.8t and have fitted a swirl pot in the spare wheel well. After 10-15 minutes of driving my high pressure fuel pump started squealing so I have replaced it for another which has done the same again. Also the swirl pot and pump feel hot to the touch after running. Any ideas?? It's got a chrome fuel cap that doesn't seem to be vented, as when I removed the return to the tank hose it kept running fuel out until I removed the petrol cap…. so seems to be quite pressurised in the tank

It has AN8 running to the pump and then AN6 for everything else

Hi

I have done a 20vt and have a similar setup to you.

It sounds like theres not enough fuel moving through the pumps and swirl pot.  They should not be hot to the touch, you will end up with a big bang! Your pump needs flow of fuel to keep cool.

Try a different fuel cap.

Also i changed my supply pipes and pickup to 8mm as the 6mm ones on the 1.3 pickup may not provide enough fuel flow.  Is your supply pump man enough? I used a facet red top as a supply pump, then a walbro 255 for the injection pump.  You should have a fair return to the tank at all times when driving.  The swirl pot is only really for when driving multiple corners as the 1.3 tank doesnt have an internal baffle.

I wouldnt drive it again until you have sorted the fueling system.

Hi Nick, sorry to bring up an old tread but im in the middle of sorting my fuel system out for my MK1. Do you have a list of what parts you used for this as im trying to leave my 1.8 caddy carb tank in there as you have. Steve

Hey Steve, I swapped it all out for a gti tank in the end as it was easier

Hi Nick,

Ok thanks for the reply. Think im going to leave the carb tank in and try a couple of other options that have been talked about on here.

Any other pointers always helpful.

No worries, one of the biggest issues I suffered with was the pick up pipes in the tank were too small to maintain fuel flow correctly which is what killed a couple of pumps before I realised

Ah ok thanks. Im going to try with the normal setup first as its far from being a driver at the mo.

Just need to understand what I need to change internally to make it work.

Hi did you resolve the issue ?

I think the pick up pipe was too small a diameter so starving the pump. I just bought a gti tank from heritage in the end and swapped it out
