1.3 mk 1 golf, idles fine, runs badly :-/

Hi there, always wanted a mk 1 golf for years and finally got one 1 week ago. Nice 5 door 1.3 with 8 months mot and tax. Body work needing attention but that was always the plan. The car starts first time every time, it's only when you start to drive when the problems arise. The car sometimes drives for about 15 minutes no problem, sometimes with only 100 yards of taking off. I would best describe it as when wanting more power say going from 2nd to 3rd there begins to 'jolt' and then cuts out. Start up is immediate with same problems moments later. People has said re do points and all that stuff but I've just noticed that this model has an electronic ignition. I'm a bit stumped now and really would appreciate any help or advice. Thank you!

Welcome to the club.

Could be a rotten filler neck…

Id have to agree with lhasadreams on this; it does sound like the fuel filler neck has rotten. Its a very common problem which leads to bits of rust and metal in the tank which get clogged up in the fuel filter.
So its a case of, change filler neck and the fuel filter and then get a big magnet and dangle it into the fuel tank and try and get all the bits out.
Best place to get a new filler neck (if it is the problem) is from classic-vw which is owned by a member on here.

Cheers,
Matt

Thank you for getting back to me. I will try this. Got a new filter ready to fit and will look for replacement neck. Thanks again.

One way to check is to see if the filter looks clogged, if not then it may not be your problem. Also, check the tank for bits floating in it before you commit to buying a filler neck as it might not be the issue

Good luck!  :)

turko  check ignition and cam timing is set correctly, all your electrical circuit's are working right (coil, points, leads, plugs etc), check carb is set up right and isn't blocked or could give it a clean, and as above check filters, filler neck and tank. Also check for any air leaks and gaskets, under carb good one to check (original mount prone to crack)

Same problem here too! Could the cold weather cause anything?

you got a hot air feed to your air intake?
the cold weather could cause a little bit of icing in the carb if not
