1.3 running issue. HELP!! MOT Monday

So just got a job and finally able to put the 1.3 golf on the road.

Go to try drive it today to check things over. Car revs fine when stationary, can reverse off my drive no problem (which is sloped upwards) but once up and off my drive, select first gear, try to pull away and it just bogs down and won't rev.

First of all thought it was 1st gear so tried to pull away in 2nd but its still wasn't having it. I've check all the vacuum pipes to the carb and found nothing so I'm thinking it must be the carb?

Any ideas? I know it can't fail the mot on this but it's so bad I won;t make it there under its own power.

Please help need it fixed ASAP

Thanks in advance

Grant

Ignition timing or mixture (possibly due to lack of fuel),

Lack of fuel isn't the issue as it has half  a tank of fresh stuff in it.

Will have a play with the mixture tomorrow.

No I mean fuel delivery, not the stuff in the tank.

I'm of the same opinion as Paul, sounds very much like fuel starvation.I think I would lift the back seat up ,undoe the fuel sender unit and check the filter on the feed pipe.Ive had a similar problem on my mk1 and also father had the same on his car when he had it afew years back.
Hope you get it sorted anyway

Oh right, will also have a look at that tomorrow. Thanks

But how would it find reversing no problem but going forward is? That's what's confusing  me.

Thanks again

Check your rear drums are not binding.

Checked before even attempting to drive it. All fine and free up after break is applied.

Trying to get at the fuel tank filter as suggested. How do I get the sender unit out of  the top of the tank. Sure there was a thread explaining but can't find it.

Thanks

Thats what i was thinking, just didn't want to snap it and be totally sacrewed for the MOT.

Obviously have to remove the fuel pick up and return pipes right?

All has been sorted now. It's was none of the above.

Did an engine conversion a while ago and hadn't driven it since. Turns out i attached the gear linkage a couple of splines out. So when in what I thought was 1st was really 3rd   woops  :redfaced:

Feel an idiot but at least nothing costly, and once i had noticed about a 5min job.

Thanks anyway guys. Hope it passes tomorrow

I was wondering but you made no mention of a conversion.

I had the same trouble, 1st gear was only available by going into the reverse detent.. Was a pig. I left it to the garage to sort. He said it was ok geting it set for 1/2nd but with it like that 5th was unobtainable.. I had a chuckle and then apologised that the MK1 GTi golfball 5spd knob was a bit inacurate as the car was only 4 spd..

It fail on emissions, wheel bearing and exhaust.

Was hard at work last night, managed to get and fit a new centre exhaust section. Do a couple of earths on the rear light which were playing up and get the front hub off and sent with the new bearing to be pressed in.

Only issue I still have is the emissions. its meant to be a 4.5 but is a 6.5

Anyone got a link to the pieburg carb setup I can't find on here? lol

Booking it in for a retest tomorrow.

Thanks
