1.3 driver overheating

my mk1 driver is constantly overheating and its doing it very fast. i have removed the thermostat but this didnt work changed a couple of pipes and the coolant.

however it does have a mk2 gti rad fitted to it. the fan does work tho but this still doesnt keep it cool.

also when its the temp gauge is almost rite over . the expansion bottle starts bangging and rattling .

could this be a headgasket?

take cap off when cold, fire engine then rev engine. you should see a good stron spirt of coolant out of the thin hose to the top of the header tank.  if not either the waterpump is bust, or the rad/thin hose is blocked.
