stuck out of gear

'83 mk1 1600 gti 5 speed box

can anyone please give me some advice. i have had no problems with the gears what so ever until friday night when i went to go into second gear the lever stuck solid just out of second. i have checked the linkage and replaced the 2 selector rods as both had broken cups on them. with the selector rods disconected the lever moves left and right and disconcting the long rod with the r-clip which goes onto the lever on the gear box i can move the gear lever back and foreward but when all connected up the gear lever is still stuck solid just outside 2. any pointers or advise would be appreciated. thanks gav
