removing/replacing inner steering column.

Hi guys and girls,

I want to fit my early (small spline) wolfsburg steering wheel to my Mk1 Caddy.  I know that you can cut/pull the larger spline off the steering column to make it fit..

My question is can you actually remove the complete inner column and replace it with the smaller splined one? If so, how?

The reason i ask is that i did remove one ages ago from a truck, but cannot remember how i did it, or whether i butchered the old column housing to get it out

Ideally i'd like to do this, rather than cut up the original one.. The part im talking about is in the pic below:
